So if you use low quantities, the old plan is better, right? Currently on an old floating rate.

I was able to keep my floating gas rate on this new plan. Not sure if that factors in.

He was referring to the floating fee FYI. On old plans it was market plus 49c, now it is 99c over market.
Isn't too crazy of an increase; works out to about $6 extra a month in the coldest months (use ~12 GJ then), so maybe $50 a year tops.
I'm on the old plan, but my 5 year electricity is expiring and I wouldnt mind renewing while rates are decently low (aka before NDP ruins them).
I assume I have to move over to new plans to renew, and lose my easymax dollars?

I would assume it is going to show up as a line item tax, and not a rate so locking in a low rate won't save you from the tax.

They'll get their pounds of flesh no matter what. And they'll spend it all and call it "revenue neutral".

When I figured mine out (floating gas, 5.99 electricity) losing EasyMax and all the changes, mine was around $3 cheaper a month. Hardly anything.

Not the carbon tax stuff itself, but rather the fact she will be forcing the phase out of our sweet sweet delicious and cheap coal fired plants; that is what I am looking to hedge against.

Ah. When is that going to be happening? I think I read the last one is 2030, but not sure when it starts. Given the rock bottom gas prices, is coal that much cheaper now?

Enmax has a new tool online that compares your usage to neighbors..
It's called My Energy IQ, it's pretty neat to navigate.
This shows my combined electricity/gas usage.
Family of 5 and a electric water heater kills it for me.

1135 total units
14GJ on gas puts me in the efficient hames rating
546kWh puts me close to similar homes. I'm sure the biggest use there is I keep the circulating fan on the furnace on most of the time to keep my basement warm(or upstairs cool in summer).

This is really useful stuff because I was actually using a spreadsheet to track my monthly usage and costs so that I can monitor how we use gas and electricity.
Our electricity usage is quite high in really cold months and was 40% higher that similar homes in the last cycle. That is mostly because when it gets below -5 for daytime highs I turn on the electric heaters in the garage. During the warmer months our electricity usage is lower than similar homes.
Surprisingly for natural gas we are always lower than similar homes. I would have expected that we were higher especially because we have a natural gas stove and oven and bbq. Homes in our area are old and most don't have natural gas in the kitchen or patio. I also cook dinner at home pretty much every day and use the bbq at least 3 times a week. I guess our home must be pretty good for heating and insulation compared to similar homes.

I find it useful to get a gauge of how energy costs are around similar homes. I was always shocked at our monthly utility bills. I guess misery loves company. I guess the LED and CFL lights are helping out. Glad they let you trend the natural gas usages with temperature. That's a neat feature.
Your usage: 24 Nov—21 Dec
You used approximately 7% more than Efficient Homes
Efficient Homes 1,095 units
YOUR HOME 1,167 units
Similar Homes 1,396 units
You used approximately 13% more than Efficient Homes
Efficient Homes 427 kWh
YOUR HOME 481 kWh
Similar Homes 639 kWh
You used approximately 22% more than Efficient Homes
Efficient Homes 14GJ
YOUR HOME 17GJ
Similar Homes 18GJ

Pretty cool idea. My home used 9% less than efficient home, and it is a late 50's build.

Alright CP,
I'm bad with numbers, and whatever voodoo math Enmax uses to turn $21 of usage into a $56 charge makes my head spin.
So I'm coming up for renewal, and being offered some of the "new" rates without the EasyMax reward dollars.
Current rate (with yearly $100 EasyMax dollars)
Electricity: 8.0˘/kWh
Gas: $6.59/GJ
Average electricity use: 252/kWh * 8.0˘ = $20.16
Average gas use: 5.11/GJ * $6.59 = $33
Electric year: $241
Gas year: $396
TOTAL: $637
Offered rate (no EasyMax dollars)
Electricity: 5.59 ˘/kWh (3-Year fixed I think?)
Electricity: 5.99 ˘/kWh (3-Year fixed)
Gas: $3.79/GJ (3-Year fixed I think?)
Average electricity use: 252/kWh * 5.99˘ = $15.10
Average gas use: 5.11/GJ * $3.79 = $19.36
Electric year: $181.14
Gas year: $232
TOTAL: $414
---
Old Rate $637 - New Rate $414 = $223 difference
LESS $100 EasyMax = $123 cheaper on the "new" rate.
TL;dr: By my math the new rate is $123 cheaper when the admin/delivery line items are not included. Will the new admin charges eat up that savings? Or do I come out ahead over the course of a year?

Im more concerned with figuring out how these new ATCO rates compare. From some posts on RFD it might be a pretty good deal.

Those are super low electricity rates. I'd double check that it's not variable.

As Fuzz pointed out it's 1-year fixed, I've got an offer for 5.99 3-year fixed. So my math is wrong.
