Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, the Airdrie Air Show is coming up next weekend (July 13-14). The snowbirds will be there in the air as well as many civilian aircraft. There will also be a CF-18 and a Hercules on the ground, as well as more civilian aircraft.
I doubt it will be as impressive as some of the bigger events like Lethbridge, but since it's so close to town, it will probably still be a good time!
Just realized I should have posted a link to the website http://www.airdrieairshow.com/

How are they getting a CF-18 into Airdrie? Or do they mean their demonstrator cockpit will be there? It is usually at the Stampede too.
A 5000' runway just doesn't seem like enough for the CF-18, but I bet the Herc can get it done.

I wondered too and found this.
Quote:
Min landing/takeoff roll is determined by many factors. For takeoff, we consult our performance manual to go through the charts etc taking into account runway condition (wet or not) temperature, density altitude, gross weight and type of takeoff (afterburner or mil power). Typically the takeoff distance with a standard load ( one centerline fuel tank) here in Lemoore is 2600 feet, a little more when hot and less when cold. This being said, if we max perform the jet we can get in the air in around 1500 feet Obviously on a carrier we get airborne within 250 feet or so.
For landing we can stop when light on fuel and stores within around 2700 feet however the "required" ( by our higher ranking officers) distance is 7000 feet waiverable by the boss to 6000. good to know that we can stop in under 3000 feet though in a dire situation. For landing on the boat we stop in 200 feet or so with the aid of a hook and arresting wire.

In years past I'm sure the CF-18 based out of YYC for the Airdrie show. 5000' just isn't much runway on a hot day that leads to a much higher density altitude (Airdrie elevation 3572' versus Lemoore at 230').

Can they just tow these planes? Maybe they aren't flying it in.
Answered my own question with a quick google search. Looks like they have towed planes in before: http://www.rcaf-arc.forces.gc.ca/v2/...ng.asp?id=3849

5000' is the minimum requirement for the CF-18.
If there is no longer alternate close by they would have to have the MAG there, but YYC would be acceptable.

Just saw it too, apparently Asiana from ICN, landed on 28 and apparently went off the runway into the bay.
Damn.
Apparently a 772LR.

I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I'm ok. Surreal... (at @flySFO) [pic] — https://path.com/p/1lwrZb

The close up shots on CNN are making me cautiously optimistic that there are no fatalities. Looks similar to the Air France 343 fuselage in YYZ years back, all got out from that one.

I've flown ten times in the last two months and thinking about plane crashes still terrifies me. I'm a good flyer but seriously, that has got to be one of the scariest ways to go.

Hmm, starting to look like they came in short and sheared the tail off at the sea wall before the runway. Going to be interesting to hear the cause of this.

I'm surprised more planes don't crash at SFO. Pretty tight operation they run down there, though this is unrelated to that.
