True, but not being able to travel supersonic over land still presents issues if you are shelling out huge dollars for a supersonic capable aircraft.

I think some of the new proposals minimize the sonic boom to the extent that it would be certified for over land supersonic travel, I think the trouble is still the fuel efficiency.

A Volga-dnepr Antonov 124 arrived from Anchorage (by way of Petropavlovsk) at 11:46pm last night. No word on when it is departing yet:

And many of the airlines with the $ to buy something like that (Emirates, Cathy, Singapore) have their biggest most lucrative routes (ie Europe/UK) with major portions flying over land.

That negates the speed benefit, but leaves you with the "drinks fuel like your alcoholic uncle ted drinks gin at an open bar wedding" disadvantage.

Damn, I was really hoping they would depart during the day. Brought my camera to work and everything so I could get some shots.

Are you refering to this departures list?
http://www.calgaryairport.com/Depart...x?cid=7&lang=1
This list doesn't show cargo departures, just those with passengers.

I'm here working late and plan on leaving around 10:30 to go hang out and watch it take off. I will post if it is still in the cargo area before I leave.

UPDATE: It is still here at 10:20pm so I assume it is still leaving as scheduled at 11:30. Taking off to go watch it launch...

I was looking at this list:

Thanks for the info! I live north of the airport... I am hoping this thing shakes my house tonight!

The wind is forecasted to be from the South so it will take off towards downtown tonight. It is still parked in the Cargo area.

It finally left at about 11:55. Here's a pic. Wasn't as awesome as I thought it would be.
