I gave thanks but this makes sense, I didn't see the game but had heard that he took a hit from Chipchura and someone had taken exception and stepped in, which is also good to hear.

Hopefully Sven takes a little pressure of himself and plays his game more.

Jooris did, but he got a minor penalty for it and the Coyotes scored on the resulting PP. Sooooo ... yeah, standing up for a teammate is fine, but please don't crosscheck the guy in the face next time, Mr Jooris.

Props to the poster in the Baertschi thread who made the suggestion to pair Sven and Byron. Maybe Byron did rub off on him. Great chemistry there.

I'm really impressed by the resilience of this squad. After Hiller wobbled, it would have been easy for the team to implode and blame it on goaltending. They didn't. It shows a lot of character.

Also have to remember he was just back from being sick enough to lose 4 pounds....might have been plain tired in the 3rd as well as getting smacked.

Better game from Glencross too--I like 'shooty' GlenX, WAY better than 'passy' GlenX.

On that note, Gaudreau needs to shoot more too...some prime chances on the PP from the high side-slot...he's got a good shot; he should trust it more!

Hopefully not a Fata. An awesome article with Playfair laying some love on Gio :

http://www.calgaryherald.com/touch/s...ml?id=10379274

Quote:
“You could tell early on when I was here, he was going to be the next captain of the Calgary Flames,” the Arizona Coyotes’ associate coach said on game-day morning at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

“I mean, you could just … tell. I said that to a lot of people over the years. And that doesn’t make me a genius, by any means. It was just … obvious.

“Did I know at that time that he’d one day be this calibre of player? Of course not. But you could see the potential, the qualities, in him, almost right away. The way he carried himself, the way he worked on and off the ice. He’s got an air, a quiet demand, of excellence around him.

“So surprised? No. Not at all.”
Quote:
“There are players,” said Playfair, “that, as you move along in your career, you look at them and say: ‘They get it.’

“Gio gets it.

“Remember when he didn’t get the contract he thought he deserved and went over to Russia? He didn’t make a big noise, he didn’t sit out, didn’t go home, didn’t pout. I don’t think he went to Russia because he liked the weather there. I don’t think he went to Russia to learn Russian. He didn’t go to make a bunch of money. He didn’t do it to stick it up anybody’s butt.

“He went over there to play. Because the next best tier of players in the world and he’d done it at the American League level and he wanted to be better.

“That’s getting it.

“And in doing so, he proved himself right and the organization wrong.”

As an old, dues-paying member of the defenceman’s union himself, Playfair vividly remembers seeing Giordano for the first time, at a summer rookie-development camp that maybe a dozen defencemen attended. So much about the blueliner jumped out at him.

“I remember watching Gio, Richie Regehr and Steve Marr. And you know what, two or three days in, Darryl (Sutter) asks me: ‘Who do you like?’ And I said, remember this clear as day: ‘Giordano. He’s got great skill. Great feet. Once he gets in condition, I think he has a real chance.’

“Darryl met with three or four of those kids and gave them all the same contracts: Three years in the American League, and if you works out for you, you’ve got a career. Gio took it and ran with it.”
Quote:
“For a young general manager like Brad Treliving coming in here, it’s such a good situation: His captain’s his best player, his hardest work, his top citizen,” said Playfair. “Wow, just what you want, right? This is a guy you can build a youth movement around because the kids come in, watch Gio, on good days and on bad days, and learn the right way. He’s Bob can be Bob, do his thing, knowing that in the room, Gio’s gonna keep it on the straight and narrow; knowing that Gio’s got the wheel.

“I talked to Brad after he got the job here and told him ‘You’re going to LOVE Gio. You’re going to really respect everything this guy stands for.’ He called me about two weeks later and said ‘Boy, you were bang on.’ “

Nice to see Byron and Baertschi have some success. Really thought Byron was going to get his first hat-trick. Man that deflection to the post on the empty net probably gave him nightmares last night. Soooooo close.

Sven with 2 assists and 2 takeaways in 10 minutes of icetime. Surprised he didn't get a shift after the 13 minute mark of the third period. Especially after we made it 6-4. Finally gets some swagger going in his game, shows some chemistry with Byron and then is stapled to the bench while Bouma gets his ice. For a guy who has "confidence issues" seems kind of strange not to reward him with more time at the end of the game for that performance.

Hopefully Sven can somehow continue to have games like that with only 10 mins of ice and earn the trust of Hartley.

Sven was great, so much more effective when he's moving his feet. I want to see him shoot the puck more though.

It could have turned bad for him though. On that first goal that Byron scored, Sven probably should have put the puck on net or put it across the Jooris (though the pass might not have been there). With both him and Jooris at the goaline, throwing it back up into the slot could have been bad, cause if the puck didn't bounce to Byron and bounced out instead, it would have been an odd man rush the other way, and Hartley would have stapled Sven to the bench for the rest of the game. It was a low percentage, high risk play, but lucky it worked out.

Wow what a surprisingly fun game to watch, great efforts all around.

I know this is a little stupid because he was only there last season but man am I glad Ribeiro isn't on the coyotes anymore, I don't really like when the Flames play against them as it is, but he's a player I hate the Flames playing against always so I'm glad that combination doesn't exist anymore

I suspect Hartley wanted to win the game and, with a lead, put the more defensive guy out. No disrespect to Sven, just situational.

So does Bollig join Seto as semi-permanent press box residents?

No Glencross on the ice for the #Flames this morning.

One can only hope. I think it depends on the team they play. A skating team without a heavyweight, I'd play Seto on the 4th line. No production, but can keep up with the play. He had a bad giveaway last game, but overall I wouldn't call him a defensive liability.

At this point, we won't have any player on our team playing 82 games. Perhaps this does give Sven the opportunity to play some top 6 minutes?
