I normally agree.. But this feels different. Maybe they do lose and we all laugh. But I get the feeling they win, and the flames just continue to be absolutely mediocre

So Yanni Gourde got 2 games for his "attempted" hit on one of the league darlings Ekholm (because he plays on the same team as Connor McDavid), yet Brady Tkachuk gets nothing for a worse charge on a Winnipeg Jets player yesterday. The NHL really does have their princess teams and those teams have the rules applied differently by the league. It is sickening.

Nah, there’s still a lot of hockey left to be played, and every winning streak comes to an end. It took a flukey physics-defying pinball goal to get them past the Flames, and many of their recent games against bottom feeders were pretty tight contests that could have gone either way. Their schedule during this streak has also been incredibly soft. Of course everyone in the media is declaring them as a powerhouse Cup favourite, but until they start beating some legit top contenders, I still won’t be convinced.

Edmonton is no good.

They could win, but a lot of teams go on heaters and then lose a bunch at/near the end of the season. "Got hot too early" has been said numerous times over the years.

Columbus won 16 in a row in 2016-17. I don't remember seeing them hoist the cup.

Maybe this version of E=NG should get an early retirement and we try something different?

Saw that ENG still has like 4 or 5 games in hand on us... so here's some more interesting stats:

EDM has played the least amount of back-to-backs in the NHL (2).
NJD has played the most (9).
CGY has played 5.

EDM has played the second-most games with at least 4 days off in between (3).
TOR and OTT have played the most (4).
CGY has played 1.

Edit: In the cap era (2005 - 2024):
ENG has played 197 back-to-backs
CGY has played 213.

Edmonton has 6 back to backs to go, though.

But that has no bearing on how fresh and rested they've been for all the bottom feeders they've played so far.

If I were a player I would not prefer the Oilers schedule. Would rather have more days off in the last 2-3 months of the year rather than at the beginning.

Tough it out. There will be lots of time off at the end of the year.

totally not the same thing, but our beer league team played a back to back this week, and I'll tell you, I am sore 3 days later. It makes a difference.

As long as they maintain a save percentage over .940 they're going to win some games.

For reference, Winnipeg leads the league this year with a .921 save percentage so the word "unsustainable" comes to mind.

No, I'm saying their schedule will get tougher, and that will make a difference, especially if their injury luck turns (which it is more likely to do when your schedule is tougher).

If you look at the LA Kings, that team was at the top of the league in point percentage in December but was behind in games played to everyone. The "make up" period for that was in January when they had something like 16 games in 31 nights, and it's totally derailed their whole season. Yes there are other reasons, but a compressed schedule gives you less opportunity to resolve other problems because guys can't heal and practice time is limited. And I don't think that's a result of the Kings being frauds or that their early season success was a mirage - they legitimately are a really good team. They just couldn't handle the challenges and speedbumps that came their way during this particularly tight schedule stretch.

The Oilers do not have a month like the Kings' January in the back half, other than the last week or so of the season. However, they do have a generally tighter schedule that should - key word should - create some problems for them that could easily throw a wheel or two off the current wagon that they are, especially since we know this is a pretty streaky team that has a proven track record of getting stuck in a rut on occasion.

To a lesser degree, the Canucks face the same thing for a few weeks coming out of the all star break but as that team seems to have a horseshoe jammed firmly up the orca's rear end (for example I would have said the same thing about a 7 game eastern road trip to start January) I no longer have any expectations about them following any sort of realistic or reasonable regression path. At least until the playoffs start.
