I am aware that Tom Clancy is not everyone's cup of tea but I just started reading the latest co-authored book Command Authority and I had to look at the publish date as the story line and how things are proceeding are damn near parallel.
( I am only half way done so I am sure that the reality and fiction will soon differ greatly)

Ukraine to seek NATO membership, says PM Yatsenyuk
Quote:
"The government is entering a bill to Verkhovna Rada [parliament] about the cancellation of Ukraine's non-bloc status and resumption of Ukraine's course for NATO membership," Mr Yatsenyuk said.
Ukraine's previous President Viktor Yanukovich, ousted earlier this year, enshrined the country's non-aligned status in the constitution in 2008.
At a government meeting, Mr Yatsenyuk said Ukraine's main aim remained membership of the European Union.
He said the bill that was being presented would also prevent Ukraine from joining any bloc that would stand in the way of this, meaning any economic union involving Russia.

That will be interesting. A NATO membership request while in active conflict with the country NATO was setup to counter.

Tongue in cheek - yes. I am not a fan of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so I'd support NATO member-nation intervention. The over-the-top nature of my post was in jest.

It would definitely bring this whole thing to a head in a big hurry if Ukraine became part of NATO. Russia would have to decide if they really feel like fighting most of the industrialized world.

I actually think this might cause the "vacationing russian soldiers" to go home.
It might be a good thing.
Putin is nuts, but I don't think he wants to trade punches with NATO.

I agree.
It would force Russia into a decision that would essentially be:
A) Go home.
B) Lose a war catastrophically to the largest military alliance on the planet.

That may be the end game, but NATO would bleed, and bleed hard to accomplish it.

It sounds like WWI style brinksmanship.

As UCB said, Putin is nuts, but he isn't that nuts.
As well, it's not just going to be all about him. If Ukraine does move towards/join NATO, how long will it take for there to be serious disagreement in the higher levels of power in Russia? And how long will it take for the vacationing soldiers to go, 'well shoot, this isn't good.'
The one thing that I am very concerned about it how bad it could become in the meantime now that this news is out. Because yeah, Russia/Putin isn't going to like it. But I don't think that it would cause a larger conflict (IE outside of Ukraine). Even during the cold war, there wasn't really any large West/East conflicts, instead only in places outside Europe. Afghanistan, places in Asia, etc. Russia isn't going to start rolling into Poland or past just to fight this.

It is brinkmanship.
Russia is just biding their time until we get closer to October/November. No one is waging a land war against Russia in the Winter!

Putin is starting to lose it... Now he is telling people that they shouldn't mess with Russia because it has nukes. This is an almost North Korea style crazy threat... except Russia's armed forces are actually competent enough not be laughed at.
Quote:
"Russia's partners...should understand it's best not to mess with us," said Putin, dressed casually in a grey sweater and light blue jeans.
"Thank God, I think no one is thinking of unleashing a large-scale conflict with Russia. I want to remind you that Russia is one of the leading nuclear powers."

No, no one is thinking of launching a large scale conflict with Russia. We'd just like you to get the F out of the Ukraine.
Man, this guy is dangerous. Been saying it for years, even when it was 'cool' to like him. Which I'm not sure how that happened. But I guess if Chuck Norris can be cool, so could Putin.

I wouldn't say he's lost it. He's just thumping his chest. And at this point, there's no reason why he can't. But yeah, he's dangerous.

I believe a sizable part of the Russian pop'l sees Ukraine as a rightful part of Russia that has no business traipsing about on its own, making bedroom eyes at the West.
They fully support bringing it back into the fold as part of returning Russia to its former status as a preeminent world superpower.
