Stockton has an average age of 24.07.

Utica is 25.54
Manitoba is 23.5 which I've read has the youngest team.

Those are good and all, but they don't tell the whole story. It needs to be compared with roles/games played etc.

For instance:

Keeping in mind the Heat have played 57 games

Orr (34) 10 games played
Johnson (32) 28 games played
Raymond (30) 15 games played
Riley (30) 38 games played, and a 4th liner
Mark Awuya (26) 0 games played
Yann Sauve (26) 3 games played
Dustin Stevenson (26) 37 games played, depth Dman

Every other Heat player is 25 or younger.

Those are all the oldest guys on the team, and for the most part they haven't played a predominant role for the Heat this season. Johnson is their captain, but he's been injured most of the year. Stevenson may have played 37 games, but for a 26 year old he's only played 89 AHL games in his life.

Like I've said since the start of the season, this is a young and inexperienced team for the AHL level. The majority of their key players playing huge roles are 20-24 years old and in their first couple seasons of AHL hockey.

Oh yeah, I'm not making any judgments, I'm just linking some stats so someone can interpret them. Another stat is how many pro games an AHL team has played. I agree with the idea that this is a development team and winning is secondary.

Stockton Heat, proudly owned by the NHL’s Calgary Flames, announce that Calgary Flames goaltending prospect Nick Schneider will join the Stockton Heat after his junior season ended this past week. In a separate move, the Heat also have released Gabriel Verpaelst from his pro tryout contract and have returned him to the Norfolk Admirals of the ECHL.

Schneider, 18, was signed to an entry level contract after impressing during the Calgary Flames training camp in September 2015. In 2015-16, Schneider played a career high 50 games for his junior club, the Medicine Hat Tigers going 21-26-1 while posting 2 shutouts.

Slightly better than the Flames, but not by much.

I believe they are still guaranteed a spot if they win all of their games. Much better than the Flames.

Good to see Kylington picking up where he left off. You have to think at least one of Kylington/Andersson will be an NHL regular in a couple years.

Because the California teams are playing fewer games than the rest of the league this year, playoff positions are determined by points percentage. The top 4 teams in the Pacific Division will make the playoffs, however, the 5th place team in the Central can cross over if they have a better record than 4th in the Pacific.

Right now, Stockton has 60 points after 59 games played (0.508 pts%). They have 9 games remaining. If they win all their remaining games, they'd have 78 points in 68 games (0.574 pts%).

Currently, the 4th place team in the Pacific is San Jose with a 0.559 pts%. The 5th place team in the Central is Charlotte with a 0.560 pts%.

Here's what Stockton's percentage will be with different totals...
  • 78 points = 0.574
  • 77 points = 0.566
  • 76 points = 0.559
  • 75 points = 0.551
  • 74 points = 0.544

Because they're primarily fighting with San Jose and Bakersfield for the final playoff spot, you can still do a traditional points comparison. Stockton is 6 points behind San Jose and 2 behind Bakersfield. All three teams have 9 games remaining. No matter what, they need to make up those 6 points on San Jose if they want to have a hope of making the playoffs.

One thing working in Stockton's favour is that 6 of their final 9 games are in Stockton, and they have one of the best home records in the league. San Jose has 6 on the road and 3 at home. Bakersfield has 5 on the road and 4 at home.

If the Heat can get...hot in the next couple of weeks that home and home against San Jose April 12th and 13th could be for the final playoff spot. Although unlikely I really hope they can somehow pull it off.

San Jose lost last night to the Gulls, so their point pct is now at .550.

Charlotte is at .560 and Bakersfield's is at .525. Stockton is at .508.

Like getbak previously stated, we need to beat those three teams for the last playoff spot.

The Grant, Poirier, Shinkaruk, Kulak recalls might not help their cause. Although the addition of Hamilton and Hathaway softens the blow a little bit.
