Sounds similar to Gillies.

I don't like drafting goalies. Good goalies in their prime always seem to come up on the trade market.

I agree; isn't a good goalie someone we can acquire via trade? They don't seem to usually hold the same value as an impact forward or defenseman.

Surely I'm not the only one that followed the U18s. I won't pretend to know much about him but he really impressed me there. Flames must have felt he was the BPA in his position and would be gone by 54. I have no issues with the pick

3.33 and a .900 .... umm not what I would exactly call 2nd round worthy.

But I am a glutton for offense. I know that we are done with that though, unless Treliving is bound and determined to screw this draft up.

We should have picked Ehlers over Bennett too. He had more points than Bennett.

You should probably log out of Calgarypuck then, we have no need for this type of rational draft day thinking.
If you don't like opinions other than those of the Flames brass (on a discussion board, no less), this will be a rough day for you.

Some people had him rated as the top goalie in the draft, numbers don't = potential.

Not a big fan of drafting a goalies but the Flames needed to add another goalie prospect to the system. Ortio will probably by on the Flames roster in 2015-16 and Gillies will be in the AHL most likely. I don't know if McDonald is eligible to be in the AHL for the 2015-16 season but there is definitely room in the system for him.

I was not referencing that we should have taken a different goalie, but that perhaps a goalie was not the right move.

wow this board is very confrontational and passive aggressive. I usually just lurk.

Meh waste of this early of a pick. Very disappointed there was a handful of really strong selections that could have been had. Nothing against this young goalie but the Flames took him way to early and have a extremely crappy track record developing Goalies they draft.

Don't like taking a goalie this early. Should have grabbed one in the 6th or 7th.

Why?

Its not just the Flames that had him as the top goalie in the draft.

Booooo. Not so much because he is not a decent enough prospect, but because he is more likely to be playing for someone else by the time he "makes it".

1.94 gaa and. 930 save percentage at u18. Named goalie of the tournament. Should be a lot better in year 3 in the Q.

Big and lanky with a quick glove. Down on his knees a lot but all his issues are correctable.

That's all I could find on him. Sounds promising so I like it.

Not a fan of taking goalies high, but I was particularly annoyed with the pick given some of the other players available. However those players were McKeown and Dougherty, who both fell quite a bit seeing as how most seemed to have them pegged as 25-35 guys and had five other d-men picked before them in this round. So perhaps a lot of other scouts and teams saw something.

I know that the team is rather short on goalie depth in the system even if Ortio and Gillies are both looking good and that this pick would be totally worth it if he can turn into an NHLer, I just really don't like the margin of error and time for goalie development. Picking one in the first couple rounds will always leave me very underwhelmed.

Yes, because grabbing a worse goalie prospect in the 6th or 7th just for the heck of it is a great logic.

The logic from some of you is awful.

"waste of a pick"

Come on man!

I guess the others 5 goalies taken in the first 61 picks were wastes also?
