I actually think this is Rutherford and Allvin leaking this to media just in case they can't sign Pettersson. Slip this trash out there and let it circulate to pull some of the fanbase over to their side if/when he doesn't extend. They've used the media before in this trashy sort of way.

If they can't sign Pettersson, Pettersson has told us why. They don't need to leak anything, the player has said his intentions.
"I want to win. I want to stay. Winning is the more important of the two to me. If I can't win, I'm sorry but I won't stay."
It's a fine argument and makes perfect sense if the team sucks again. Why would a guy with elite potential settle for less than mediocrity.

... They're not that good. They're probably decent, and have some skilled players who are all on heaters to start. It's the exact same story as last year when they lost 7 straight to start, except flipped backwards.
I'm not saying they won't make the playoffs because goaltending is king but I don't think they're a 100 point team (currently on pace for 123).

The Canucks probably aren't as bad as they were last season - Demko sucked and then got injured, and tandem was Martin/Delia - but they're not nearly as good as their record indicates this season.
They'll come down to earth, but if their key players can stay healthy and productive, they have a good shot at the playoffs at least, which should be easier if Calgary and Edmonton continue to struggle, and San jose and Anaheim continue to be terrible.
I would suspect they just want to make the playoffs to get Petterson to commit.
They have talent upfront no doubt. And Tocchet will squeeze blood from a stone for awhile. The question will be sustainable defense and Demko being on another level.
They aren't as good as their record right now but definitely look like a 95-100 point team.
Once they get rid of Myers next year and maybe Garland this year to free up cap they could be on the upswing.
I really liked that Hronek trade last year and he seems to be fitting in well.
At the very least Alvin looks to have a plan, wish we did.

Not overly surprised, good forward, great goalie but the D held them back but with the new acquisitions on D- not too surprised. Health/Injuries will be a big factor.

Pettersson is a pretty big part of that plan, though. No.1 centres don't just grow on trees so won't be easy to replace him should he leave.

I'm not sure how meaningful any stats (advanced or otherwise) are 10 games into the season because of score effects and small sample sizes. Here's the Oilers for instance:
2nd in CF%
2nd in Fenwick
3rd in Scoring chance %
1st in xGF%
1st in HDCF%
29th in team sv%
27th in PDO
And Vegas (who is 2nd in the league in goal differential) has some pretty bad numbers too despite being undefeated and obviously a quality team.
Vancouver is toxic and if things turn south again and he's locked in there it'll be a bad time, because they have some of the most atrocious fans on the planet, and no sunlight.
The umbrella of toxicity stems from the sketchy ownership right on down. I don't blame the players for banding together and playing hard to showcase their value to other clubs.

TBF that post was only in response to a quote with GF and GD stats for Vancouver. Meeting stats based on small sample size with maybe more accurate stats (vis-a-vis play quality) on the same sample size.
