It was ok today (way better than last Wednesday) but the bottleneck coming into downtown Bow Trail/9th Ave was bad. It's always been a poor designed entrance to downtown and add lane closures at 10st.

The absolute disdain for both pedestrians and vehicle traffic associated with construction going on downtown seems way worse this year than I can ever remember it. There's not only no thought going into trying to avoid making it a horrible place to try to get around, it's like they're actively thinking up the worst, most disruptive things they can possibly do.

I made it from Deer Ridge to Downtown in about 25 minutes using Deerfoot.
At 7 am...

Typical times for me.
Probably because everyone South of you was hamstrung.

####, I was too lazy to go out and shovel the snow yesterday so later today will be a lot of fun.

I had to drive from 25th to downtown a few weeks ago, ad I was on 4th street. Pretty much every block has a lane closed somewhere, so you are constantly moving left and right. Plus every light is timed to be red as you arrive. It was misery!

I'm also pretty annoyed with the pathway they rebuilt going into confed. The pathway is done, and the landscaping looked 95% of the way there. The last 2 days before winter hit they didn't do anything. Now it's covered in snow, and will probably not be open or plowed until spring. Though all they actually have to do is move two barriers, I somehow doubt that will happen. Not that I want to be riding up 10th street anyway, given all the half finished construction and poor lane clearing.

Having never owned or even used one, I have a couple of snowblower questions
  • Is there a minimum accumulation for them to work well? If I get a skiff I am guessing I am still shovelling/sweeping.
  • How do they work on uneven/non-concrete surfaces? I have an interlocking brick patio that is a bit uneven and a big wooden deck that I am wondering if I could keep cleared.

My commute actually got quicker this morning because I walked a bit faster since it was cold out. Glad I wore a scarf.

Yeah wasn't too bad at all for me on my crosstown drive. Luckily one of the perks of being so central is I'm always going against rush hour, but it was still way better than last Wednesday.

Driving home is going to be the real fun: most of the snow is set to fall during the day today. May need a sleeping bag for the commute..

Luckily I really don't need to drive anywhere for the next couple of days. I expect that the evening commute is going to be a pretty big nightmare.

I went to get my winters put on last week, but when I got there they told me that the tires didn't show up and wouldn't until this Thursday.

bleah.

70 minutes from Airdrie into NE Calgary today, roads weren't too bad but it was just super slow the whole way. Drive home is gonna be fun -- not like we'll be moving fast enough to be in any danger.

I don't know why they don't do more passes on some main roads . they leave a large amount of slush and powder usually in the right lane of two lane streets .. scrape it bare so we are in better shape for the next snowfall rather than having layers accumulate

people who are determined to drive half the speed limit and constantly feather their breaks are a hazzard to everyone on the road. keep moving!

Oh and the American woman in my building I met last week coming in from the parking lot who disdainfully deduced on Wednesday afternoon that because our parking lot hadn't been plowed yet = Canada doesn't have snow plows, must've been shocked by the sound of snow plows outside our building at 4:45 AM this morning. It's a miracle!!

Roads are way worse than they were this morning. Half of Deerfoot in the deep SE was completely covered in deep snow. Drive safe everyone.

Yeah I got home around noon before it got too much worse. Would be pretty fun to drive around in if there was no one else on the roads though.

getting out of my drive way and street is starting to get dicey . doesn't get much plow attention and the driveway is too big and too much snow for the traditional hand shovel

the 2-4 cm forecasted would have been fine but 20+ is going to cause issues ... at least it looks like we will get sun for an extended period after this .. not warm enough to melt roads though
