I would have thought the Devils doing the Flames this weird solid indicates a Markstrom trade is just around the corner.

2nd and B prospect seems like a reasonable return for a rental defenseman. Not exciting but in line with my expectations. Bourque or Stankoven were complete fantasies from Flames fans.
What I like about the timing of this trade is that it allows Conny to have more time to focus on a Hanifin trade. Based on reports, Tanev's market value was a 2nd and Hanifin's is similar to Lindholm's (1st, prospect, roster player). It's good to have almost a week to make sure we get the best combination of prospect and roster player out of a Hanifin trade, than to try to squeeze a 1st out of Tanev.
Plus, getting this out of the way means that we can be in on other "surprise" deals which happen every deadline. Whether it's trading our players like Mangiapane, or discussing other team's players (maybe Norris? Pinto?)

Dealing one of the UFAs now and knowing the return from it gives Conroy some greater focus on what he'd like to get from a Hanifin deal (and Markstrom, if that reignites). Maybe he puts more emphasis on the Center position given what is offered is relatively equal amongst competing offers.

Tre has a routine of calling every media pundit he knows and telling them how close he was after every trade he loses out on.

This deal reminds me of the Kris Russell return (Pollock (a recent 2nd round pick), Jokipakka and a 2nd).
We used that 2nd to draft Dube, which was a pretty good pick (until it wasn't).
2nd feels underwhelming until we can put a name to it. It could end up being a really good prospect.

More that they did the Stars a solid.
They ate the 25% for Dallas and got the 4th round pick in return.
Did nothing to help out Calgary.

I agree on this. Except the 2nd was a conditional first that didn’t convert.
What I’d like to get people’s thoughts on is Jokipakka vs Grushnikov. Jokipakka was more developed and had already played some NHL games although he wasn’t that good. Grushnikov is apparently a defensive savant but I’ve never watched him.
Does one expect that Grushnikov will provide more value at the NHL level than Jokipakka did?
Jokipakka gave the Flames 56 gp, 12 points, even +/-. Qualitatively, I remember Jokipakka being essentially replacement level as a Flame. He then played 3 more games for Ottawa and went to the KHL.
I don’t expect Grushnikov to match Jokipakka as a Flame based on his stat line. I hope he does but will be surprised.
So essentially, I feel like the Flames got way more for Kris Russell than they did for Tanev, despite Russell being actively bad at hockey and Tanev being a guy who can fill in on a top pair or anchor the second pairing. Hence my displeasure.

I think so, and I would be happy to put a bet on it.

Not really doing them a solid. They were paid a 4th round pick for 25% of 23 games of Tanev's salary.
They essentially just paid dollars for an extra 4th rounder.

TSN Insider Trading just now: Edm, Tor, Van, and Col were the four other finalists for Tanev
One of the offers did include a 1st round pick but the Flames would have had to take a player with term

How can those be the final four finalist when the winner isn't there?
