True.

If you sign your first NHL contract at age 22, it's only a two-year ELC… but the normal rules then apply, so you're a restricted free agent at 24 and eligible for full UFA status at 27. So you're looking at two years of rookie maximum plus a three-year bridge contract to take you to UFA.

Compare that with signing your ELC at 18, a bridge contract at 21, and potentially going UFA at 25. That gets you more money faster. Even if you don't play in the NHL until age 20, you're still UFA-eligible at 27 and get your second contract two years sooner.

It looks like a loophole at first glance, but really it's just a waste of two prime earning years.

Ah, gotcha. That makes more sense then. Otherwise I couldn't understand why that wasn't happening as it seemed like it would be obviously better for some players. But if they still have to serve the ELC/RFA years then they'd just be delaying the UFA payday for the slight benefit of being able to pick the initial team, which wouldn't come with trade protection anyway.

Getting pretty wild now.

Anthony SanFillipo a Flyers blogger (who appears to have once written articles for the official Flyers website at one point) claims that Kevin Hayes is the reason Cutter decided that he did not want to play for the Flyers.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1744547990994325572

Hayes apparently got close to Cutter after Cutter got drafted.

Hayes denying that he had any involvement with Cutter's decision not to play for the Flyers

Bragging about almost missing a 9:00 tee time when invited out to golf - classy. Then only play 9 holes. The guy is 19 and an athlete - but it's too hard to get up for a 9:00 golf game when the guy you look up to and gives you career advice has invited you out? Wow.

And if it has anything to do with AHL time, that's even worse - "I'm too good for the AHL". It's one thing if a Russian says it - I still don't like it, but it's more understandable - because they can stay at home and play in a pro league, but for a North American to say it, yeah, that's just "dude, I don't do AHL"

it's pretty rare to see a prospect shut the door on the team that drafted him like that. I mean, this isn't just "thanks, but no thanks" ... it's a "don't even talk to me". Crazy stuff. You don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but Gauthier certainly comes across as a dick here.

I think Briere has handled this well. Not only was he able to keep the noise down about this, he also managed to get a decent return ... I can't imagine Fletcher handling this situation as well as Briere did. If Drysdale stays healthy, he's a great pickup for them. Only 21, right handed. Those players don't come up on the trade block very often, and for good reason.

Anaheims forward depth is amazing now ... building around Zegras, MacTavish, Carlsson and Gauthier? Not bad. And when you have Mintyukov, Luneau and Zellweger in the system, yoi can afford to give up Drysdale too. Just shows you the value of having lots of draft picks and good scouting.

This guy sounds extremely immature and not leadership material. Flyers may have dodged a bullet here if Drysdale pans out into a top pairing defenseman.

Flyers and Flames have always been linked in my mind.

State/Provincial rival getting multiple generational players multiple times. Toiling through "mediocrity". Now Flyers get their own Adam Fox situation.

Most significant part of the story is Gauthier camp/agents closing communication to Flyers staff. If the Flyers reach out, you can at least respond with, "We are still not interested in signing with you". To go completely dark is nuts. Briere/Keith Jones fly out to Sweden to try to meet with the guy, and he shuts them out again.

Awesome return given the circumstances, and great to keep the situation under wraps.

When a team drafts a player, especially one as high as Gauthier they have invested a lot of time and resources in following the player and coming to a decision that he would be a valuable member in their organization. To ghost them completely is pretty unprofessional by both player and agent. Flyers can't put a gun to the kid's head but at the very least they should provide an explanation of what it is about their organization that the player doesn't like if only to address any issues they may need to work on in the future when it comes to attracting players. Torts isn't going to be there forever so it would seem like a strange decision for a young player to go this far just to avoid the head coach.

Agreed. We are sister franchises.

-both cities tend to prefer physical hockey vs high offence
-both franchises have refused to do a scorched earth rebuild and rarely get high draft picks despite their sustained lack of success

It speaks volumes about the character of the player, but the player is just a kid. It is far worse for the agent - very unprofessional, and they should - DO - know better. You don't burn bridges when you live on an island this small, where everybody knows everybody, and everybody talks. It's just bad form. It amazes me whenever an agent participates in behavior like that.
