Yeah it's a nice building but when the rubber meets the road, it's still a freaking hockey arena. How many conversations regarding global or world class cities start/end with "Arena" or "Mall"?... Not many.
Let's keep that in mind with our cities' impending arena project. It doesn't say much about your city if facilities like these are on the top of the attractions list.

Marketing should just make it an official annual event, like the teddy bear toss.

The Oilers are in need of something spectacular to distract from the hockey abortion they produce on the ice. This building accomplishes that for them.

I like it from the outside. Maybe too much shiny aluminium siding for my taste but it really looks good. Just odd to have the greyhound station pretty much underneath it.

I think Edmonton is mostly defined by the fact that it owes about half of its existence to the Provincial and Federal Governments (the Federal Government has a huge presence there, think Armed Forces and Canada Justice for starters).
In my view, that says even less about your city.

I'm actually looking forward to visiting the Pork Chop as I continue my quest to visit every NHL arena. Based on those ticket prices though, I'm going to wait until next spring and hopefully get something cheap off StubHub.

Which spring? The Oilers spring; i.e.; December, or the rest of the world's spring?

Not going to lie. I'm envious. It's going to be a beautiful facility and it's going to be likely the only area that organization has a leg up on the Flames.

You forgot having a massive leg up as far as "Being No Good".

Just goes to show how long it takes again. So the conversation about Calgary's new rink started in 2015. That means best we can hope for is 2023. Yikes.

How many "world class" cities can't host a major arena concert tour? How many "world class" cities don't have a hope of hosting a stadium concert event? The women's World Cup skipped Calgary as a possible host city, being bypassed by the likes of Moncton, Ottawa and Winnipeg. Ouch.
And don't discount the draw of an arena. I know plenty of sports fans who have a goal of visiting every arena/field/stadium where the league they follow hosts events. There's one on this page. Quality area's are not only a requirement to keep your franchise viable, but they are key in drawing and maintaining talent. Having access to world class game, practice and workout facilities under one roof it is a requirement these days.

Your 3 iron is real, the other is concept art.
How many years till the surrounding buildings match the shinny new toy?
