I'm stuck between choosing between Apple Music and Spotify at around $10/11 a month for what I'm still subscribed to because I like it in the car.

I hate how streaming services all have the same content that doesn't interest me anymore. I would pay $30 a month for a streaming service that just replicated TV from the 70s and 80s and had classic TV shows, classic movies, and classic commercials on all the time. It's so hard to find good quality collections of vintage TV shows.
Check out the PlutoTV app for old shows. Commercials though but it’s free. I haven’t gone deep in their catalog though.

I really am not bothered by commercials on streaming. I watch tubi occasionally for documentaries and there’s maybe four sixty second commercials in a ninety minute show.

I also like how they have a circle icon to tell you how long the commercials are going to be. Gives me time to check some hockey scores or irritate someone with a post on here without straying attention from the show I’m watching. I find I often pause Netflix or Prime shows occasionally to do something anyways.

I’ll also suggest PlutoTV. Lots of good older content.

My Tubi recommendations are nothing but bikini related movies now.

Sounds like Amazon has laid of thousands of workers from Prime video/MGM/Twitch. Are there even any Amazon originals coming up that are worth watching?

If you have a fire stick Prime is trending closer and closer to a traditional cable provider, I'm not 100% sure they need to produce content.

You get a bunch of live networks for free that would have been airwave broadcasts 40 years ago. There are a bunch of free access ad supported streamers that just pop up when you search for a movie, airing C list / 25 year old content. And you can sign into all of your premium networks, then have them searchable on your main prime homepage. And they have a rent/buy option for just about anything you can't find on the streamers.

From what I can tell a Chromecast is more of a casting device that requires another device (such as a phone, tablet, or computer) to cast content to it.

A Firestick is a more self-contained device with apps on it, and you can play content directly from the device itself.

Chromecast also has apps on it. Probably a very similar catalogue. The Firestick focuses on Amazon Prime as it's an Amazon product. Chromecast is a Google product.

The new Chromecasts have a remote, you don't need a phone at all to cast. It actually works very well, you can install apps, and the interface works well enough.

The new ones don't just cast, they're full on streaming devices now.

All of my Chromecasts are old. I really should look at upgrading.

Ya, I got the new one fully intending on just casting as usual, but it worked so well I've gone to just using the included remote.

So what does that make us Roku users?

Not sure how Chromecast works, but when we switched from a smart TV platform to the firestick, the main firestick home page looks a lot like the prime home page, but a search turns up results for Disney Plus, Crave, AppleTV, Netflix, Tubi, Plex, as couple other free ones too. So for me it feels a lot more like a bundled package expect for the payment method.

Personally, having a Roku, a Fire stick and a Chromecast (on different TVs) I like the Roku the best but really at the end of the day they all do pretty much the same thing.

If you're new to the IPTV game one thing you need to keep in mind is never spend more on a provider than you're willing to lose, as they can be shutdown anytime. A lot of them try to get you to subscribe for a year or more with deep discounts, but it's usually safer to go month-to-month or a 3 month term at the most
