That is some beautiful countryside, Cowperson. I like the more urban life now, but eventually I know I wont be able to resist rural life.

Alright. I'm on my way home late last night after shooting a lacrosse game, when I notice the sky lighting up over Springbank. I'm armed only with my Nikon D80, 50mm f1.8 and work's Canon EOS 30D with a 100-400. I know I have my shutter cord (as I like to call it) but no tripod. I figured I'd just put the nikon on the roof of my car and adjust from there. Anyways, as I'm setting up on Old Banff Coach Rd. an amazing blast of lightning occurs right in front of me. It was awesome, but of course I hadn't set up yet. Anyways, I was out there for a few hours, got nice and wet... had my cam wrapped up in a sweater... and these were the only two I got. Moral of the story, don't leave your tripod and other lenses at work That, and the show always seems to stop when I show up.

I'm sharing only because I wanted my time to be worth it

Good job.

Nice to know I'm not the only strange person driving around locked and loaded and ready for anything (70-300 zoom on a camera within reaching distance in the car).

On this particular occasion, I found that f1.8 was too much, as the foreground started coming in really light after about 60-80 seconds.

I set it at f4, ISO 100 and put shutter on 'bulb'. I maybe could have upped the ISO a bit, but I wasn't too picky last night.

Obviously, having a tripod and my other lens would have made for a more appealing photo, but having the shutter cord was essential so I didn't knock the cam and have to sit and hold the button down.

I'd leave it until a flash of light came across the clouds or until ~2 mins. After which, I'd wipe the lens off and take another shot.

This was my first attempt at lightning a few years back:

Almost the same technique as the blur filter in PS.
Those two above were done by an online tiltshift maker.
In the past I have used PS to create these, but it's a pain in the butt.

Here are some more recent shots, I thought I'd share with CP.
