More than a few reputable sources would suggest otherwise...
The Guardian;
"For Brazil, there was also the added satisfaction of seeing Fred, who has been the subject of so much criticism following his vapid displays against Croatia and Mexico, get on the scoresheet. The Fluminense striker could hardly miss, and television replays confirmed that he should have been flagged offside, but all that matters is that he is off the mark."
BBC;
"Replays suggested he was offside but referee Jonas Eriksson stood firm and Fred celebrated a moment that should help his confidence after poor showings against Croatia and Mexico."

Just goes to show that the English don't know the game.
he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
Additional note:
Because 99,999% of the time an offside happens with the goalie being the last opponent, 99% of football commentators will not understand an offside call where the last opponent is not the goalie.

You're right. I haven't got a clue. Thanks for that. I like being patronised.
The photo here makes Fred look slightly closer to the goal line than David Luiz when the ball was played across.

Sorry for the snipe about the English. Probably it's not just you, just that I don't understand when medias of other countries spout similar nonsense. It's just a bit frustrating that pretty much every game people cry about reffing decisions that were clearly correct. It's especially frustrating when it's not random people but otherwise reputable news sources.
This wasn't even close to an offside.
Speaking generally though, the reffing in the Brazil-Cameroon game was pretty bad. The ref let way too many blatant and nasty fouls slide.

Was merely an observation, not a cry about a reffing decision. As stated elsewhere, given England's early exit, I'm pretty impartial from here on in.
Your photo looks to have been taken slightly earlier than the photos I've seen, by which time Fred had moved himself closer to the goal line than the ball when Luiz crossed the ball.
Itse beat me to it; but yeah it wasn't close to offside.
I think a lot of the early reporters forgot about the whole behind the ball thing and were just looking at Fred relative to the defenders.
