You can't have GMs negotiating with a fear of hurting someone's feelings.
Be respectful.
Use your leverage (they will when it's their turn).
Get them signed.

Papa Hockey stated he felt (not exact words) put off? By the first negotiations with Treliving, felt they low balled him and used their leverage way too much. It's not about hurting feelings but maybe negotiating better and maybe not nickel and diming your star players then going out and giving Troy Brouwer 3.5 million.
Maybe if Brad negotiated a little better both those players would still be here. Lord knows he bumble Tkachuk's second contract and maybe if he respected Gaudreau a little more he would have been more honest about signing here again.

If he's a jerk about it sure.
Not sure I've gotten that from most players etc on their time in Calgary.
Every team has a tough negotiation story.

It would be nice if he turned into a top six NHL defensemen who you can play in all situations. Need that badly in this organization.

Come on, let's not make things up for the sake of some narrative.
It was 4.5 million.

Do we really regret Johnny not being here? He's performing very slightly better than Huberdeau.

I have high confidence that between Poirier, Brz and Morin we'll have at least one really good NHLer with offensive instincts.

I think the negotiations have to be about what your end goal is. Trelivings may have been price but I think for young players coming off ELC for a team like the Flames the priority has to be term. Try to get the young guys (especially going forward) signed to as much term as possible. Only when that is done should they go to the UFA market and even then make sure that term does not mess with your ability to sign the young guys longterm.
Every contract that Brad signed for a player coming off ELC and for longterm has worked out
Rasmus - 4.55. When he signed it Rasmus was in the middle of a 22 point season, first year of the deal he got 21 points in the 56 game season so that season may have been an overpay. Then he took off and looks to be a 40-50 point guy. Overall great contract.
Hanifin - 4.95 million. First half of the contract may have been a slight overpays last half of the contract it was an unbelievable deal.
lindholm - 4.85 (was signed after a 2 yr bridge, not after ELC) - was really a great contract every single year of the contract except for maybe this year.
Before that Gaudreau and Monahan were good contracts for the most part.
The bridge contracts have often just led to really big contracts at some point in time (like Mangiapane). And the UFA contracts outside of Markstrom and Coleman have been severe overpays. Even Coleman this is probably the first year he has truly outperformed his contract. Kadri is TBD but this year is going quite well. But you almost never get a UFA contract that is a steal like longterm deals for guys in their 20’s can be.
I hope this summer Conroy basically gives Zary some version of the Kotkaniemi contract. He probably outperforms it and for the years he may not do that (first two) it does not matter.

To be honest, we need all three of Poirier, Morin and Brzustewicz to turn into NHL defensemen.

Different scenario, if he stays here he'd still be an effective player. He's essentially given up on competing and has focused on being a family man. I remember hearing his cardio is brutal now because he doesn't take his training seriously. His GAF meter was out the window as soon as he ended up in CBJ instead of NJ/PHI.

As I said earlier this week in the trade rumours thread this would get done before the weekend. I really love this guy's upside, the hockey Gods owe us one. It would be amazing to have that stud #1 young D man, hopefully it comes to fruition.

Yup I like the mindset with a few lottery tickets in the newer style of highly skilled offensive Dmen. Meanwhile we've added some possible Tanev type Dmen prospects to compliment them.
If one of each turns out its a huge success.

Yeah I love that they are taking a bunch of these guys, or trading for them. The chances are good at least 1 pops, and that will be huge for us.
We need skating, scoring, and playmaking from the backend.
