Dorion said teams were calling interested in trading for Methot but idea of trading him did not sit right. Decided to leave him for Vegas.

Your speculation or from someone else? If yours is it speculation or a trade idea?
Lol just a random trade thought. I honestly feel like if we want to get past the Oilers in the playoffs, we need an answer for McDavid and Tavares would be it. I also think Bennett will be nothing more than a true 3rd line center. I just don't think he will amount to anything more than that but hopefully I'm wrong. And trading him now while his value is still high for an elite level talent like Tavares would be fantastic. With Backlund as our present and future 3rd line C, we wouldn't need Bennett and having JT, Monny, Backs down the middle would be absolutely deadly. And with Hamonic rounding out our top 4, our back end would be lethal as well. We'd be a really well rounded team (as long as our goalie prospects develop as we hope) which is what is needed to get out of the West and into the Cup Finals.
Our team sucked because it was poorly constructed. They had a Hall of Fame RWer, the best goalie the city had ever seen, and frankly not much else. The three best centres Jarome ever played with were Daymond Langkow, Olli Jokinen and Craig Conroy.
On defense, their best defenseman was Robyn Regehr, who couldn't play offense. Their second best defenseman was a young Dion, who couldn't/wouldn't play defense.
They never managed to find another elite player forward.
Hmmm, seems to be a cautionary tale of what happens when you have a poor drafting and development system? Don't start throwing around draft picks or prospects until you have depth suitable to losing those assets.

The Flames as they are currently constructed are light years better than any team Darryl Sutter ever assembled. Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Frolik and Tkachuk are a better group of top six forwards than anything the Flames have iced post-2000.
And look at that list. Almost all homegrown, and not a single one that required dealing away assets to obtain. Building a team the right way takes some time and patience. Building a team, and maintaining a team, in a cap world takes that much more patience and planning.

The defense needs one top-4 guy to be able to play two pairs 25 minutes a night.
There are actually a few of those guys out there in free agency, so maybe the smart move is to try that avenue first, rather than throwing away needed assets when you may not need to give them up?

One core player is older than 28. Trade some prospects and help this group. Don't trade prospects in the desperate hope that a poorly constructed gaggle of aging veterans will finally get it done.
That's right, one core player is older than 28. Now may not be the time to make a deal to make a push. Kind of like when Fletcher didn't make an immediate push with the team after the '86 win. He recognized there was some work to be done and some more fine tuning to be made. He recognized that some of those players needed some more seasoning, and that more help was on the way from within. He only made the deal when the time was right. I think Bennett and Tkachuk need a little bit more time, and that Jankowski, Kulak, Skinkaruk, Andersson and Kylington are players who are ready to step up and provide that internal support. Do we need a #4? Yes we do. Should we be giving up assets to get that player? Not until we exhaust other avenues, as I don't think the time is right. If free agency is a bust, and the internal prospects don't look like they can address the need, then go make a trade for a player. Stone should be our primary target. We know what we have with him in the lineup. We don't with others.

Matt Duchene's agent, Pat Brisson had a quick chat with Joe Sakic at the end of 1st round and is now in discussion with David Poile.

No doubt the Preds have interest in Duchene, but don't want to give up a Dman. Work to be done. Saturday should be interesting.
Ellis and Subban would be quick hard nos from Poile. Josi and Ekholm you'd have to think about, but who would want to break up that top 4?
Between Johansen and Fiala that's not a bad top 6 to work with next year. Maybe a little light on depth but making a play for a Duchene level player takes away as much as it adds.
With Lehtera traded tonight, one would think that there is likely some sort of market for Brouwer.
