That seems very pessimistic to me. You think he's only going to score 17 goals in the remaining 64 games, or put another way, keep on shooting at 7.1%? For context, last season the league average for forwards was 11.9%. The only way a pace of 22 goals makes sense is if you think he is going to miss serious time - more than 20 games - which is certainly a concern as he ages.
Lowest shooting percentage of his career by nearly 1.6 points and 5.8 points under his career average. Shooting a little less often but he will in all likelihood start to regress at some point in the future we just don't know when.
For what it's worth, Natural Stattrick has him at 5 goals on 8.5 expected goals, albeit in a small sample. Ovechkin, as you would expect, has outperformed expected goals in 15/16 seasons available on Natural Stattrick, often by over 10 goals, so even being on par with expected would be a step back. Barring injury, I don't think his season-end goal total starts with a 2. He'll be okay.

He will get the record as he will play until he does . Washington won’t care and he can score 15 a year standing in his spot
He’s 73 away . Simple
Do people really want to see this? The last thing I want to see is him hanging around until he's 44 or 45, just to get the record - that makes it a parody, and a travesty.

It won't take that long, and no matter how he does it will be one of the great feats in modern sports.

Did people hate is when Gordie came back and played till he was 52? I honestly have no idea as I wasn't alive.
But if Ovie is still potting 20-25 goals a season I see no reason to not enjoy it, regardless of his age.

I’m not able to separate my feelings for him as an athlete from his political views. It’s kind of like I can’t listen to Ashley MacIssac’s music after hearing he likes little boys and golden showers. So … I hope he suffers a non-life threatening but career ending injury.

I think he gets it in 121 more games, 1 less game than the other guy, just because him doing that will add a tiny extra grain of sand to what I know will be there for some smug Edmonton bastards.
0.55 G/gm pace required,
0.61 G/gm career, so it's possible even if not likely.

Sometimes it's best to keep certain thoughts to yourself. Sheesh.

Well yes, but, him getting the record means Goddamn Gretzky's record falls. That alone, makes me happy.
Yes, there were a lot of people who hated Gordie coming back. Jim Rome famously put a bounty on his head.
well to be fair that was his age 69 comeback
he left the NHL at 42, took the next 2 years off, played in the WHA through his 40s then one last year in the NHL at 51, playing with 39 year old Dave Keon (as a kid I sorta assumed Keon was even older than that) and briefly 40 year old Bobby Hull

Just for you. Enjoy!
If I can still enjoy a Picasso or Gaugin painting despite knowing how they were in their private lives, I can still enjoy the achievements and accomplishments of great athletes or artists. As long as it's not illegal, do what you want privately. No need to be such a puritan.
And to be clear, you don't need to condone or love what someone does privately, but it's also none of your ####ing business, so let it go.

44?
He’s 38 . You think it will take him 5.75 seasons to score 75 more goals ?
Averaging ~13 goals a year ? You think he’s that washed up already cause of a poor shooting % start to the season
I think it’s more likely he gets hot and ends with 30 this year
Is it a standard poor shooting percentage that evens out though, or is it a "let's get the puck to Ovi at all times and he'll shoot every time" low shooting percentage.
Just from watching bits of Caps games it sure seems like the latter. He looks almost toast in terms of keeping up with the game.
Ovechkin is on pace for 22 goals this year, which might leave at 844 by the end of the season. He will need another 50 if he is going to beat the Weiner. In other words 3 more seasons after this one.
I think he does it, I know it looks like he's lost a step ( he has) but any team would love the publicity, and playing until your 41 is not totally unheard of.

Well usually players get “retired” before then . Only the elite and lucky injury wise ever have a chance to have a contract offer that late in a career
Father Time is undefeated - but if anyone can give it a run for its money it’s Ovy

And that guy was a fitness freak for most of his career (Gio). Pavelski is another guy approaching 30 who took great care of himself. Ovi - I'm not sure is in the same boat as those guys.
