Definitely an over payment, although he is a very good player

I initially thought this was an over payment especially comparing to Monahan. After realising Johansen is a year away from UFA and looking at other first line centre contracts I now think it is very reasonable however. This could turn out to be another great value long term signing for Poile

Not an overpayment. He's a solid center, young and this essentially covers all of his best years.

It's on the pricey side for sure. But he'll only be 32 when this contract ends. So even in the final years he should still be a reasonably productive player. I think it's going to be when teams are paying 35 year old forwards this type of money where they'll find themselves in trouble.

I don't see Malkin on that list. 259 points, 111 goals, 248 games. You must have set 300 games to the minimum.
Johansen earned this contract. Neither an over or under pay, right in line with his peers. When he's motivated and backchecking he's among the best centers in the league, and even when he's floating he's a consistent offensive threat. Nashville should be a tough matchup for most of the next 8 years.

Yeah at first glance I immediately thought the contract was bad, but I'm biased because I really don't like him.
An objective stance considers the buying of UFA years and his production.
Doesn't seem like the kind of guy to build around, but I won't question Poile who for the past decade has made one great move after another

I don't understand. What about him doesn't seem like he's the kind of guy to build around? They traded a top young defenseman for him and then he was their number 1 center on their way to the Stanley Cup final.
Why wouldn't you want to build around that?

Interesting to see Spezza quietly sticking around in that top group of centres.

Would you take Johansen over any of McDavid, Malkin, Stamkos, Tavares, Matthews, or Eichel on account of his durability? I wouldn't.

You pulled out a points list you said showed where he fit amongst centres to support your stance that his contract isn't a gross over payment. I provided a better list to show where he stands amongst all his peers to better judge his contract value.
He's a top 20 centre in the league, not top 10. Do you pay a 15-20 guy $8Mx8?

If he continues to do what he has done for the last 4 seasons he is easily worth that contract.

8M is high. About a Million high.... but what are you going to do, he's a year off UFA and you want to lock him up. I think most high priced contracts are overpriced though.

It's market value for a pending UFA big #1 centre. Top 10 centres in a similar situation would make 10+ million as evidenced by the Toews/Kopitar deals. You have to pay it, trade him or lose him for nothing. It's market value

It's market value for a top line C, UFA contract. Can't argue with that.
But of all the guys in the league that warrant an $8M contract, he is near the bottom of my list of guys I want on my team to build around. Don't like him.
