Whenever possible, they apply against the cap in the season in which they're earned.
However, it is possible to exceed the cap by a certain percentage (I believe it's 7.5%) during the season so long as that excess amount is only unearned bonus money.
At the end of the season, they calculate how much a team owes for bonuses that were earned and adds it to the team's final cap value. If the combined cap hit is greater than the cap, the excess amount is taken from the team's cap the following season.

$1.5M base salary
$2-3M if he scores 25 goals while finishing with a positive +/-
$500k for every playoff round win

I have a hard time believing he really wants to play with the Oilers when he knows how well that would go over with his real fan base.
And if he does, he can look elsewhere. Calgary should not be a Plan B compared to that team.

FWIW... the Versteeg - Bennett - Iginla line was the most dominant line on the entire team in my playoffs for NHL 17.
