Just got an email announcing that Las Canarias is closing their doors at the end of this year. We went once, and had their squid-ink seafood paella. It was very tasty though maybe a little over-salty for our tastes. It seemed like a nice, family-run restaurant, but was probably in our "return once every year or two" list as opposed to something we'd frequent more regularly.

For $18, there should be enough food for an adult. The waiter was not surprised at my disappointment and brought me back the menu. No thanks, I don't want to add another $18 tidbit of food.

"$68 for two people and we needed more food after. It's only vegetables. Why $18 for mushrooms + egg + potato? "
You should have gone to the Coal Shed right beside it for 'dessert' of a pulled pork sandwich....

Halo had more problems than the economy. Check out any of their reviews online. And it seemed like they were running a permanent Groupon deal which is usually a sign of a desperate restaurant.

Went back to The Daily today for lunch and was really disappointed. Seems like a few months after a lot of places open, the consistency and quality suffers.
Just not good enough.
I had the grilled cheese which is hard to screw up.
But they put too much of the tomato chutney on (which i had asked to hold altogether) which made the toast soggy. And in the middle there was just a massive brick of half melted cheese.

Nope. Not good enough.

Think it's still worth going for brunch?

Tough call. I went for brunch there when it first opened and it was slightly above average.
Since then my wife has had two bad meals there and I've had one.
And the couple next to us refused to pay their bill (though I don't know why - not sure if it was food quality, slow service, or something else).
I think you can do better.

Has anyone been to Plowshare Artisan Diner? I have a friend who constantly raves about that place on Facebook but I don't recall it being mentioned in this thread yet. Is it really as good as she claims it is?

The new Bridgette Bar on 10th avenue is very good. Everyone is raving about the beef carpaccio:

Smith is good but not great. They overdue a lot of flavours but decent quality food. A nice option for a non-chain in the Deep South. Will definitely go back.

Only opened recently. I've been meaning to go, so I can't speak to whether it's good or not but the credentials are there for the people in charge.

I mentioned Plowshare in here a few weeks ago. We went for appetizers and drinks and were impressed. We also met one of the owners and he just seemed really nice and committed to good service, quality food. Just got a good vibe overal.

I've been meaning to check out the brunch but haven't had a chance yet.

Plowshare and Foreign Concept look very promising. Still plenty of really good new openings happening. Maybe really low available rent helps the new ones.
