Its a lilac bush? My neighbor has those, a giant batch of them, she cuts them back by about a third every year. They grow like crazy every year, her whole garden does actually.

Yeah, lilac bushes come back very quick. I have two in my back yard, and I cut one of them back all the way down to ~6" from the ground, and it was back up to 5-6 ft in three years.

Well the fact is that it has been an extremely wet spring in southern Alberta. Unfortunately overall distribution of rain across the province has been poor as most of it hasn't gone to the areas that needed it the most so I can understand why some Calgarians may tire of the "we need more rain/snow" talk.

Yeah, worst case, it's done anyways. Just cut it off and reshape and allow the branches to grow around it. It grows fast.

Lilacs are good for that. I had to cut down my lilacs by 2/3 this year for window installation so that they could put up a scaffold. I'm hoping I'll be back to close to par by mid summer ish (from 3 feet to around 7-8 feet ish tall) and I plan to flood the #### out of it ASAP to encourage rapid growth.

But in general it'd still be wonky looking if it's a thick branch completely snapped off on one side. That might take two seasons to recover from. The thinner branches can only do so much to cover a section like that.

Appreciate this post a lot since it points to the impact that the last two months of precipitation have had on the province with facts and figures. Basically that Southern Alberta is now at soil moisture levels (5 day old data not inclusive of this snow event) comparable to normal but for other areas they haven't seen the precipitation to bring them out of drought conditions (central, Peace & North East).

Not really, I asked whether the wet spring has eaten into the dire famine level drought predictions coming from February. There actually is evidence it's making an impact in Southern Alberta and North Central Alberta. Still some parched areas of the province that could use some rains / snows. Suave's post is the only thing resembling anything fact based on the topic in the last few pages.

I suck at posting photos, so we’ll see if this works. Gotta be close to 40 cms out here in the foothills. Had a big tree fall on the driveway, so was already out with the chainsaw to try and get the kid to school and then found out school was cancelled when I got back to the house.

Some parts got a lot more snow than others.

In the NE, yes, there was a couple inches of snow on the grass, but on the walk, It had almost all melted off already.

Drive to work in the SE down stoney, basically the same speed I always go.

Figured as much. My daughter works two days a week near Strathmore and they cancelled today because of the snow. But they are all in Calgary and have to make the call based on what they know, and can see out the window basically. They really need some highway cams in that area, that would help immensely.
