I'm pretty firmly in the "no stat" camp. Especially on such short notice when businesses wouldn't have planned for it at all either financially or in their scheduling. By all means have a "day of commemoration" and if you're really so deeply in mourning then take a vacation day.

Then again I'm one of the people getting annoyed that every time I try to watch the news it is mostly 24/7 coverage of a hearse driving down a road, and even more annoyed by things like a provincial government contract I was going to be working on being delayed because the government isn't supposed to issue contracts during the period of mourning (I don't really care about the contract delay, it is the principle of shutting a bunch of government functions down - does that mean their contracts people are getting paid but not supposed to actually do their jobs now?).

Nobody* (except for a couple of Maritime provinces but do they really even count?) has given a blanket stat that covers private sector businesses. Seriously. Nobody. Giant nothingburger.

I obviously would love to have an extra day off regardless of the reason. But, with regards to businesses I can understand how it would be problematic and a hassle. The staffing issues around employees who might not have child care and having to provide stat pay would not be good. At my work the stat on Monday likely falls on our month end review day so everyone involved with that process will likely be working anyways.

Yeah and for me I'd be working anyway because the US market is open. It's not really about the day off for me, although more stat holidays in general would be great from a personal perspective.

We are in wait and see mode. Since we are contractors we are expecting DND will be taking the day off in which case we have a pretty slow day.

Sounds like anyone who wants to go to the local ceremony is welcome to regardless if we get the whole day.

Albertans are invited to participate in an outdoor ceremony in honour of Her late Majesty at the Alberta legislature at 10 a.m. on Sept. 19, the day of her funeral in London, that will begin with a moment of silence. Workplaces, schools, offices and retail stores are encouraged to also observe the moment of silence.

As part of the day of mourning, all employers are encouraged to make accommodations for employees to either attend the ceremony at the legislature or otherwise mark the occasion of Her late Majesty’s funeral.

Schools will be encouraged to offer opportunities for students to take part in the day of mourning. Alberta Education will provide further information to school boards Sept. 14.
