But every NHL team signs it for a player already on their roster.

We pay Marner big money for a year, retain the max and get a 1st, and get that Huberdeau contract off the books. Yes please.

Yeah it is preposterous but ine can dream.
I don't think weegar/Anderson + markstrom for Marner is completely unrealistic value wise.

He is not waiving his NTC to come to Calgary. He can stay put and go to free agency and pick his destination.

Should be noted Marner was born there. Don't think he wants to go anywhere, certainly won't be strongarmed into a trade with his protection (one more year after this one still to run on the current deal).

It’s pretty much a certainty he’d want to go where there’s no pressure so he can enjoy his millions. It’ll be some southern team if anything.

I don't even know if you have to upgrade on him necessarily - it's just when you surround him with Lyubushkin and Benoit and a 40-year old Mark Giordano and a breaking-down TJ Brodie, that he has no one to insulate his miscues. They need to upgrade everyone around him, but they don't have the money, so they can't.

It's a flawed roster, with flawed players.

And he disappears in the playoffs.

Game 5 is Tuesday, but the Leafs might be able to find a way to lose tonight.

Also doesn't help when you do have some decent players you trade them for Erik Gustafsson.
I mean isn't Sandin what they need right now.
Oh well. I enjoy watching them crash and burn and do it over again.

Well more that they traded Sandin for a 1st...so lets not ignore the biggest part of that trade.
But to me that's more about the overall direction they have taken with the roster.
Leafs made a decision to be "bigger and harder to play against" under Treliving, and it hasn't really worked.
Here are the pieces Treliving has added on the roster:
Bertuzzi
Domi
Reaves
Edmundson
Benoit
Lyubushkin
Now to be fair to Treliving...he didn't have a lot to work with. His team was out of cap space, and had very little in the way of prospect / draft capital. So he also didn't pay much to bring those guys in.
Leafs had no 2025 1st, and no seconds in 2024-2026, and no third in 2024.
So Dubas had really driven that team into the ground, with very little to show for it.

You're missing a key piece.
Klingberg.

It's funny how it played out for Treliving.
He left a mess for Conroy to clean up, and ran off to Toronto to clean up Dubas mess.

I was looking more at guys playing on the playoff roster.
But really even though it didn't work out I wouldn't call 1x$4.25M for Klingberg that bad of a bet...he's actually what their PP probably is missing right now.

You don't trade Weegar, you keep guys like that. You better have an extension worked out too for Marner, you are probably looking at $12M AAV to lock that down if he even will sign. It is a bad idea.

$117.25M in savings for players in their 30s, on retirement contracts, and probably get a 1st for Marner at the deadline, you'd seriously say no?

We will need some vets for the young players. We can't have all 20 year old players. Otherwise we will be San Jose and forever rebuilding. Good vets as well which is what Weegar is.
We can't be signing Corey Perry types on a rebuilding team.

Give up Weegar to get out of the Huberdeau disaster, get Marner, and probably get a 1st at the deadline? The rebuild would be over and we'd be on the upswing.
