Finally got around to cancelling cable and phone today. Big surprise, Shaw has changed their packages around and gotten rid of Internet50, Their still trying to milk $100 out of me per month just for the internet. I told her to downgrade me to Internet30, we'll see how it preforms. They might force me to change every 6 months so I can get the "new customer" discount.
There was a 15 minute line up of people, probably half of them were turning in cable/phone equipment. Gotta wonder if Shaw is in trouble financially. I don't feel sorry for them, maybe they'll start offering cable packages that people actually want. Or god forbid they look at the itunes model and start selling shows online for $.50 per episode or something like that.
They've spent the last few years jacking prices up by 10% or more a year. When times get desperate, it's even easier to spot the expensive item that needs to go. They screwed themselves on this.
According to that I should be getting ~6 channels, no? Thanks for that RW, I didn't know you could DIY one so easily. I'll probably attempt it this weekend

Being in the beltline- what direction does your antenna face? It will work a lot better is it faces west. And if it faces west- you will have issues if you are on the 3rd floor and there is a 10 story concrete building beside you.
If the above is the case and you have a north or south facing balcony, you'd be better sticking the antenna off the balcony.
To give you an idea, I'm 2-3 time further away in Copperfield, but have no issues getting 4 channels with a cheap antenna, and all 6 with a decent antenna.

I know its not optimal, but if you still have Shaw internet, you'll get the the basic channels in SD if you plug the cable to your TV. There is also a red banner that runs along the top warning you that the analog channels will be phased out soon.

I picked this one up during Boxing Week and can pick up all 6 channels in Montgomery.
I use this one and it gets me all the channels in Airdrie. Sometimes it gets a little choppy during heavy snow and such but for the most part it works really well. My upstairs one works better than my main floor one during bad weather.

I no longer get analog cable at my house. Also when I did have Shaw in the past, the installer would put in a filter that would block out the channels. I know in the past some installers wouldn't bother if you already had the filter to limit you to channels below 23, but I think they were cracking down.

It used to work in my area. Then the banner went up about 2 years ago, and right on the schedule it warned, the SD channels were turned off.
I'm so used to OTA TV that I forget that other people get more channels. Occasionally I get some blips, but I live pretty far south and have a puny little antenna hooked up to a bunch of coax that is split, so I works surprisingly well considering. Global, City, CTV are all crystal 1080i picture. CBC flips between 720 and 900, but it's probably still better than the ultra compressed channel you would get on a subscriber service.
My building is still feeding analog channels, so that's a bonus. I get about 35 channels, including TSN. But the only Sportsnet channel included is SN360 which only shows the rare Flames game.

I don't live there, just wondering.
The only games OTA are CBC and the rare CITY games.
Yep, I do, I use the cheap MX3 Android box. I've only tried getting streams on there once, and it was a long process to get it to work and haven't bothered with it since.
I mainly use it for playing stuff off a USB stick, or NAS. Also downloaded some additional plugins for it, where you can stream random content. It's not organized super well with those plugins, so don't dive deep into them much, but there is some decent content there as well.
