I'm sure Tanev would love to come back to Calgary, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of teams are going to throw a lot of money at him - and term.

Lest anyone forget, Tanev was undrafted and signed by the Canucks. He played for 10 years for the Canucks , until the fumbling and idiocy of Benning and company led to his trade to the Flames where he played the past 4 years.

Tanev was signed as a UFA by the Flames. Vancouver let him walk.

Surely you remember the origins of the ill fated "Great Save Tanev" by an excited Hughson, only to have Boston score seconds later?

Great Save Tanev was 2012 against the Kings I believe

A Vancouver win means the NJ 4th is upgraded to Vancovers 3rd this year. It's not insignificant, but if Dallas advances to Stanley Cup Final it's an added 2026 3rd from Dallas. We can collect on both, realistically now.

Thank you for the clarification, I hadn’t meant to say trade.

Ya Benning lost Tanev and Toffoli and Stecher because he was fixated on OEL.

This was a terrific series. Unfortunately one team had to lose.
One round away from a flames win!

What do the flames get if they make it to the finals, an extra 3rd?

And why shouldnt we be one of them?
The reality is that we're going to suck long and suck hard, but we're going to have a lot of spare money lying around while we wait around for Treliving's screwups to expire and if he's already got his Cup?
Why not?

Yep - I believe they gain a 2026 3rd round pick.

Tanev to the Flames is pointless.

I dont disagree, but its not 'entirely' pointless.
The man is a warrior and an experienced veteran and we're going to have a very young D-Corps for a while.
He could still mentor and shelter some minutes.

If Tanev is open to signing consecutive one-year deals with the Flames with the shared intention of being a trade option to contenders late in the season and with the cred he's getting in this year's playoffs, he returns a first rounder or equivalent next year. Future years could still garner good returns. And he's mentoring the young defencemen when he's playing with the Flames.

Dallas was the better team in my mind. They are super good in their own end. Great goaltending and enough firepower up front.
I think they will destroy either of edm or vcr.

If you're trying to be competitive as you retool or rebuild you definitely can use a Tanev. He plays the game the right way. Good to learn from.

Not sure he'd be willing to do that though. Not if he can get term. Especially with the way he throws himself in harm's way.

Yeah, their depth is going to be too much for either team. They have 8 forwards who put up 50 points; the Oilers and Canucks combined don't have 8 50 point forwards.
The only real chance would be if the Canucks beat the Oilers and Demko returns in top form and steals the series.

Yup, it's totally up to him. If he's in favour of it, though, that is a way that benefits the Flames.

I like the idea of teams like Dallas, NY or Vancouver (shudder) doing well, for the sole reason that the makeup of their teams aren't luck or lottery based.
It feels hopeless when a team like Colorado is so consistently near the top of the contenders list. All you need is a MacKinnon and a Makar and you're a Stanley Cup contender!.
Dallas is a fantastic team, but they're forward group doesn't really have a truly elite forward. Maybe Robertson, but I'm not sold on him.
They have 1 elite defenseman and an elite goalie. That seems attainable.
NYR, same thing. Panarin and Fox are fantastic hockey player, but the makeup of their group seems attainable as well.
Gives me some hope as a hopeless flames fan.
Also makes me sad about the collosal failure of 2022. That group had potential to at least take Colorado to 6 or 7 games.
