Found out today that an old classmate is going to be on the May 18th episode.
Man, I should have differed university a year, 2 folks a year behind me on the show now.

Maybe when you went isn't the reason.

Is Jeopardy! Masters the new branding for an Ultimate Tournament of Champions?
Mattea is still going strong on the episodes I get to watch but think she's only got a game or two left. Had a few tough challengers recently but her getting some obscure finals helped extend the streak to 20.
Speaking of Bialik, I've figured out she struggles to host because of her acting background. Everything is like reading from a script with deliberate enunciation that doesn't fit a fast paced game show. She also can't handle going off script and seems to freeze at half correct answers instead of quickly asking to be more specific.

No, that was a huge single-elimination tournament with 145 total contestants.
The Masters tournament only has 6 players competing. It's set up so they will play through every lineup combination possible with 6 players -- which apparently is 14 total games.
It is not a total money tournament. Each game is independent, and the winner of a game gets 3 points, second place gets 1, and third gets 0.
After they've worked through all the combos, the top 4 players will advance to a semifinal, which will play out over 4 games (again mixing through every 3-player combo possible). The scores will reset for the semis and the top 3 will advance to the Finals.
The Finals will be 2 games.
The 6 players are the 3 finalists from last year's Tournament of Champions (Amy, Andrew, Sam), plus the 3 players with the most games won in regular play (excluding Ken and Amy), who are Matt, James, and Mattea.
The plan is for this to be an annual event, where the 3 finalists from one year will return the next and the other 3 spots will be given to that year's ToC winner, plus there will be a qualifying tournament for one spot, and the final spot will be reserved for a special invitation.
There will be 20 total games, with 2 games airing back-to-back to make up 10 hour-long episodes. Four episodes will air this week (M,T,W,F) and three episodes will air the following 2 weeks (M,T,W).

Why did she not bet all of it? (Regular jeopardy)

Also very happy to see Mattea get on the board

If Buttrey is sad about the matchups, I would suggest he is justified. All players deserve a level playing field. Buttrey has faced Holzhauer and He 3 times each. While Roach and Schneider have had a softest strength of schedule since each have only faced Holzhauer and He two times each. Amodio equal to Buttrey has faced Holzhauer and He 3 times each. If the matchups pattern runs true to form for games 13 and 14, the matchups will be
Game 13
Amodio - Schneider - Buttrey
Game 14
Holzhauer - He - Roach
The first time in the whole seeding round that Amodio and Buttrey have faced each other. Furthermore, Schneider would be facing Amodio and Buttrey a fourth time each and Schneider having the noticeably softest schedule of all 6 players.

They do not play thru all the comboa.

The two winners of the previous episode will automatically face each other (always in the second game of the night). Their third opponent will be determined by a random draw of the remaining players that have not yet competed against the other two together.
|
So games 1 and 2 were drawn (I assume randomly), and from then on all the matchups were determined by results.

As per above, the matchup schedule isn’t set. Todays games are based on yesterdays results.
Seems fair to me.

James Holzhauer is a god
Before this tournament I would've said Mattea was the weakest player of the six and would've been surprised if she got any wins. She is doing way better than I thought she would
Amy going from TOC winner to eliminated in the quarter finals is a shocker

It’s too bad Ken isn’t in this as he’s the only one that can (and has) taken James down
I thought Matt would flame out but he’s been way better this time than in the last tourney
Andrew has a chance but needs to nail daily doubles

Yeah, that was bad info I was working with. There were actually 10 total combos possible and they only made it through 7 of them.
Based on the structure of having the winners always face each other and the third player in their game always be someone the other 2 haven't faced, it was the maximum number of game combos they could have done in case the same 2 people kept winning.

This is James' tournament to lose and second is completely up for grabs.
It really looks like Matt has studied quite a bit since his last appearance on the show. Night and day from his last performance. Mattea too possibly.. a very realistic chance at second although you have to imagine Andrew is the odds on favourite for 2nd but its anyones game after James.

I actually thought it was 20 possible combos. I could be wrong tho.
As for the tourney, James is too good. He’s not even trying.
I don’t mind this format but I hate it that final almost never matters. The points system means there’s no reason to try in final even in a runaway. And basically every win is a runaway because of the daily double strategy. It’s almost anti jeopardy.
If they did a total money format, it would encourage more competition even late in runaways.

20 possible combos of 3, which is 10 possible ways they can do 2 games in an episode with no repeated players between the games.
