The really stupid thing is these will be really easy lawsuits to win, there's absolutely no question here, the trademark is owned, new twitter clearly is a similar company with a similar purpose, there is no question as to who came up with it first, this as clear a case of legal slam dunk as you can get, if Musk uses X, ignores the cease and desist while at the same time allowing all kinds of foul language and images on 'X' that can be argued have a detrimental effect on Meta and Microsoft's reputation, Musk will be eviscerated
Yeah, I would imagine that companies like Meta and Microsoft have in-house legal teams to deal with basic copyright protection stuff, so it doesn't even really cost them anything extra to deal with it. Maybe some overtime hours and a round of pizza if there's an unusually high amount of paperwork for some reason.
If Musk is dumb enoguh to let it expire, yes, I think anyone could then register it. I think a registration is good for 10 years, so it depends when it was last renewed. But it may not be very useful without the domain name, which is super cheap to keep renewing.
I'd guess the odds of any of this happening are slim, but who knows. Musk might sell it to Putin or Trump or something, just for the lulz.
I don't tweet and wouldn't consider myself a "user" of Twitter, but I did have the Flames account shortcutted on my computer to check out videos and general Flames news and sometimes I'd get into unrelated rabbit holes. I've removed that shortcut, and now just go to the Flames website to do the same. I didn't do this because of some kind of moral stance or anything. I just didn't want to create an account to get access which it appears one must do now. Perhaps losing leaches like me was the intent. If so, it worked. I'm one person, but am curious how common that is.

Even if the trademark expires, if the brand name is still being used you won't be able to keep the registration. However, Musk may be enough of a loose cannon that he would make some kind of public statement, like "Twitter is dead, we aren't using the trademark ever again...blah blah blah". That would be pretty good evidence for the TM being up for grabs.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the newly named X has warned companies that if they don’t meet benchmarks for advertising spending, they will lose their gold verification check marks on official accounts.
The gold checks are one of the last viable symbols of authenticity on Twitter, now that the standard blue check has ceased to verify anything other than an $8 monthly payment and possession of a phone number. X’s threat to companies is that they should spend money on ads, or X will make it easier for someone to imitate them on the platform.
The website formerly known as Twitter is trying to win back advertisers yet again with half-off deals on certain ads – and reportedly threats to remove gold checks from company profiles if advertisers don't start spending money.
X is reportedly offering to cut the price in half for companies willing to publish video ads to run alongside trending topics in X's Explore tab. The ad buys will give brands 24 hours of placement atop X's trending topics list, and discount offers are available until July 31.
That's not the only incentive X is offering its advertisers, according to the Wall Street Journal, which viewed the internal emails sent to ad buyers. Along with the discount, X has reportedly given advertisers an August 7 deadline to spend money on the platform, or lose the gold verification checkmarks many were given with little notice in April.
Interesting insight by a person who company was bought by Twitter in 2020, and the differences before and after. Note if you don't want to read it, she reads the whole thing in the video. Options!

So, Musk now has the @x handle. What happened? Did Musk reach out to Hwang? Did Hwang cash in and get a paycheck from the company for the handle as some on social media have speculated?
No, the company just took it from him.
"[I] got an email basically saying they are taking it," Hwang told Mashable in an email exchange.

What short, catchy username did Musk's company change Hwang's handle to? @x12345678998765.
