I did not send my kids to school today, half-day not worth it. I'll stay off the roads and not be in someone else's way.

That was our plan, but apparently they're making some special project in my daughter's grade 1 class and she demanded to go. Stupid teachers and their engagement learning

I don't remember my front door ever getting the frost. I've wedged a ski pole against it to seal it shut tighter and within ten minute the ice melts away.

Ah the eternal front door strike plate adjustment struggle.. when it's nice out I can adjust it later, and when it's too cold it's TOO COLD to adjust it!

"Google, set a reminder to fix the striker plate the next time the temperature is above 5 degrees."

I assume that wouldn't work, but damn, that kind of reminder would be handy.

Stupid districts for not closing the schools when they have an elective policy to do so when windchill under -40, I'm sure teachers would've loved a closure today. That's what happens when they have to be glorified babysitters, parents would complain if schools were closed sadly.

Through SmartThings, I have a routine to send me a notification to unplug my garage fridge when garage temperature reaches 1 degree.

Yeah stupid parents complaining that they need to scramble to find child care last minute or take the day off work when they thought their kids would be in school.

Worse is the families where one works and the other has to re-schedule yoga and other things. My wife says those parents are way worse than the ones that both work.

As an aside, downtown looks less busy than a weekend. Old school bosses suck!

Don't blame the parents, blame the society that demands having both parents working full time just to survive

Parents thought there was zero chance of schools being closed on day 3 of an extended brutal cold snap? And I get why they're open, I'm just saying don't blame the teachers for it either haha, I'm sure they'd rather be at home today too. So send him in to do the group project I guess.

EDIT: Yeah HC I hear ya. It's nobody's fault really, save for the arctic sharing its fun with us.

Calgary almost never closes schools dues to weather. And this isn’t the first cold snap this city has experienced in its history.

You can decide whether or not to send them to school. It was literally the last paragraph in the CBE email sent out yesterday.

Quote:
We respect the right of parents/guardians to make their own decisions about sending their children to school. If your child will not be attending classes please ensure you contact your school's attendance line to report the absence.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this winter weather event.

The CBE sent out a couple of emails over the past few days. Basically said that closures are very rare, expect the schools to be open, and if relying on buses to be prepared for possible delays, etc. Closures are not on their radar for something like this, and I feel that they communicated that quite well.

I can't even recall the last time the CBE did a system-wide closure. I'd be willing to bet that it might been for a very heavy snowfall/blizzard, but not for cold temperatures.

Are outdoor thermometers affected by windchill?
