I disagree on some part. He will get a max ELC wherever he goes, BUT, I think he's looking for an NHL guarantee. A max ELC means little without NHL time. He (or his agent) is looking for the highest payout possible. This might be his one and only NHL payout.

That settles it, he'll sign with the Oilers Aug 2nd.

I don't think it's about an "NHL guarantee" ... just about getting an opportunity. Chicago is so stacked that Hayes will have a very tough time cracking the lineup any time soon. Same thing happened to his brother and Pirri, eventually they both got shipped out. Morin could be next. And now with Teravainen being in NA, Hartman developing nicely and guys like Nordstrom impressing as well, it's not going to become easier. Other teams will be able to give him a chance in the NHL earlier, with less fierce competition. Quite similar to Corban Knight last year, who knew that he would be buried on the depth chart in Florida behind numerous other young centers.

Yeah, he isn't good enough to demand a NHL roster spot.

Pretty straight-forward though - don't give him a guarantee (doubt any team will and the Flames afford him as much opportunity as any team does).

Max ELC is nothing - basically free - to acquire another good prospect, especially at our thinnest position.

No harm in trying, if he busts he busts - most do.

He won't get a guaranteed NHL spot with the Flames but he will get to be in the organization with his college linemates/best buddies. He also can look at the depth chart and see the Flames biggest hole is RW prospects and he fits the size criteria the team wants. The flames make sense for a lot of reasons I hope he signs here

If he wants to play in the NHL, the Oilers are probably his best bet

I have to disagree with you about Edmonton, I'm pretty sure he wants to play in the NHL.

Not interested.
I have seen all Hayes games in WCH and he doesn't impress like Johnny, hell it is nowhere close. If we sign him that's fine but I wouldn't give up much to get him.

When your biggest weakness on the team is RW. I don't think you can pass on trying to add a big speedy RW who incidentally was made better by one of your best prospects. Even if he never plays on a line with Gaudreau again, it's still worth a shot trying to sign this guy if he goes to UFA. And for the Flames, a max ELC isn't going to hurt their pocketbook. I feel that argument is weak.

Don't think it makes a huge difference but I think it should be noted Hayes is a left shot. Think he has a history of playing on the right side though, considering JG played LW on his line.

I read he was playing centre until his senior year.

As a hardcore BC fan who came to this forum for the express purpose of continuing to root on 2 of my favorite college players, I'd love to make it three.

Odd question:

During the recent UFA negotiating window, were teams allowed to speak to Hayes? i.e., Flames say they will offer him a rookie max and chance to play with Johnny and Bill next year if he waits to Aug. 15.

Just saw this from Scott Powers at ESPN Chicago.

"Many believe Hayes will eventually sign with the Calgary Flames and join his former Boston College teammates Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold."

And boom goes the dynamite.

Pretty accurate speculation. But then again it's also a fairly easy one to make up too.

I wonder if there's another deal to be had with CHI in terms of dumping some salary with the added bonus of acquiring Hayes' rights.

Oduya or Leddy are allegedly on the block.

What would the return need to be for Both Hayes and Leddy?
