We had this issue at the Saddledome last night. My wife was trying to text on her iPhone 4 (she just got it yesterday) and SMS kept failing.
15,000-20,000 mobile devices in the same, small, concentrated area would probably be an issue for any phone. I remember I can't really do anything on my BB when at a game for the same reason

Me too, SMS was flaky and data was completely inoperative.

Exactly the same with my wife's hours old new Iphone 4 too. Her data/SMS didn't work until we got steps out of the Dome.Tried to call in and call her phone....nothing, it just sat there showing 4 bars. My BB was fine throughout the night.
We're both on Telus...she's of course HSPA and had 3 or 4 bars (I know, a relative signal strength) and I am on CDMA still though (with only 1 or 2 bars), maybe that was/is the issue.
Hopefully an isolated incident.

This is the exact scenario that even the most avid apple fans were saying would suck for an iPhone 4. More people in an area than the infrastructure would support if it had to deal with a low signal.
99% of the time in a major Canadian city you won't have any issues, but times like this you will. Unless you bought your phone in the US on release day, this is something you knew about when you bought the phone.
Given the reviews of people on this board alone, it seems like a minor inconvenience, unless you spend 8 hours a day at these locations, like the OP seems to.

So any other phone would work except an iPhone 4?
I don't quite understand what the problem is. If the network is just overcrowded, wouldn't it stop working for everybody, not just the iPhone 4?

I think it's strange that the iPhone is showing full signal but not working.
I would be more inclined to think it's the network. I've had problems with my old pearl not receiving messages or sending them multiple times in the upper levels of the saddledome.

I'm looking into Rogers right now but I still have a year left on my contract so I gotta do something about that first.
I know I can suspend the service for couple months but that means I still have make up for the months I suspended later. Is there anyway I can get them to release me from the contract since this is Bell's network fault not mine? Are they allowed to charge their customer while providing no service at all for half the day?
Thanks

I would get out your high horse named Justified as well as your soap box and threaten to call the BBB, the press, or whoever you have to if they don't.
If their network doesn't work --in your house-- then you're pretty fubar'd.
Start calm and rational and asking to speak to as many bosses as possible but if that doesn't work act like a cornered animal.
Good luck.
Edit: If they mention that you signed a contract fire back that they have some obligations as well and you think being able to make calls and receive calls from your living room is a pretty reasonable one.

Nah, I have a Nexus One and had the exact same scenario.

Like at the dome?
I wouldn't mind if it didn't work once a month for couple hours but I think its ridiculous that it won't work at all on my campus and I'm on the campus for more than half the day.

That's what the limited sample we had in this thread indicated, plus it seemed to match the scenario which would lead to problems connecting with an iPhone4.
I could be wrong, I am certainly not an expert.
edit: guess it didn't work with other phones as well.

Yeah, my comment was in regards to people having issues Tuesday at the dome.

Think that's why I seemed to only get some of your texts, and rather delayed too?

I am having the exact same problem but I have an iphone 3GS with telus. My phone works perfectly everywhere else but once I step foot in the dome it stops working, it is driving me crazy. I phoned Telus but the tech guy I talked to didn't have any answers

switch to a better phone, thats my response

And it's a useless response. The original poster didn't ask your opinion on the iPhone he asked about an issue he was having. Considering the fact he has an iPhone already would lead me to believe he likes them.
And then you go on to try and provoke another user because he likes something that you don't like. I wish there was a dislike button for posts like yours.
