Luckily for me I always put away money every paycheck and now it is paying off. It sucks living on your savings but really it's just money, I will make lots later and this summer is going to be ridiculous! There is nothing better than waking up at noon, go play 18, nap, hit the gym, nap, drink, pass out and repeat.
|
I've never had a summer like that, and I'm experiencing it right now. Wake up, go for run (soon to be replaced by swimming), go to driving range, play 18 holes, go for scenic bike ride, play lunch time hockey, the possibilities are endless.

It took me a few months of searching to land a summer job, but it worked out. Good luck!

This will be my second summer like this. When I was 20 I did the same thing and no matter what happens in my life I look back at the summer and just smile. I am hoping this summer will bring the same memories.
It's only been a week today but so far have played 5 rounds of golf. I think the best part is when a friend says want to go out? Want to go camping? Want to go on a road trip? You can always say yes!
I honestly believe everyone needs to have a few months to themselves and just hit the restart button on life. Luckily for me I have the savings but also a very supportive family who can help me out. For example my mom bought my golf membership, love you mommy! (Yes I'm too old to say that but whatever she bought me a freakin' golf membership.)
Just enjoy it! You may never get the chance to do it again.

No offense to anybody out there looking for work. I feel for you, I really do. Its not an enviable position to be in.
Having said that, as an employer, I like this way a bit better. A year and a half ago, I was trying to hire somebody. I ran an advertisment for 6 weeks and got 2 apps in. Both known drug users and you couldnt pay them enough money to work.
Now, I have more selection. I run an ad now for a week, I get at least 20 apps in. People aren't being quite as demanding as before.
Its quite the seesaw battle. I wish there was a more even keeled ground but sadly right now there isnt.
I wish you well in your search for employment.

Yes.
I've been in your shoes since January. I was in a Management position, but I was not shocked when I got the word.
What I find on those sites is so frustrating! It's either "Join a Winning Team" a.k.a. McDonalds or It's "If you bring 15 + years of expeirience in the field of Petroleum Engineer" or some other Exec Job. There doesn't seem to be anything in the Middle.

As an employer I totally agree with you.
18 months ago not only would I get few resumes but I had one girl show up for work one day and she never returned!
Another one told me she needed a week off because her grandmother died, then I found out she went to Las Vegas with her boyfriend!
I was layed off over a decade ago and its not fun, but, as an employer I'm thankful to have a really great staff again.

Sample00... are you at least acknowledging the applicants? I've found quite a reversal of basic decency with HR departments now. It's gone from being polite to applicants to being downright rude.

with friends or pickup? If its some pickup game, where do you play?
Make us 3 for the unemployment club, though I'm still a poor schmuck student and have a few things I got to do this summer, but I love going hiking or outdoor climbing and the routes are open while everyone else is at work. My roommate is unemployed now, and when she's back from Hawaii I'll have another to add to the unemployment fraternity to go do outdoors stuff with.

i kept notes of those recruiters and what goes around, comes around.
never in my entire career have i dealt with such a lack of professional conduct. i think frankly many 3rd party recruiters have just never experianced such a swing in the demand curve and didnt know how to manage in this new enviroment.
no excuse though. my opinion of career recruiters took a major nosedive.

yes, we acknowledge the interviewed ones.
I make the ad very clear that only those applicants considered will be contacted. The applicants i interview, the ones I turn down, I call them and let them know. If they want to know, I will also tell them why I chose someone else over them. Whether its experience, edcuation..etc.

Sounds good, keep it up!
Better than getting a call for an interview, scheduling a time, then showing up and having them say they already filled the position or the person to do the interview forgot and doesn't have time. Or ignoring me after my interview so I have to assume that I didn't get it and why. I try to be the most professional person there is... at least attempt to do the same.

I have been unemployed since March. It sucks. I even found a job at the end of April with a start date in late May. Contract signed and accepted, a week before I was to start they called me up and said to hold off for a couple weeks. This is when i started looking hard again. Turns out they could not hire me due to unforseen problems with workload.
I have been told by someone who knows things that looking online for a job is dead end right now. Companies aparently are not even posting jobs on their own sites because they have been using the 'economic situation' as an excuse to lay mlcontents off. So in the end it all comes down to connections.
I have also noticed over the course of the last year that intermediate positions have gone from 3-5 years minimum experience to 5-8 years in my field of work.
Best of luck to everyone without a job, except if you are looking in the same field as me.

Buck up, Missy! Of course you'll never work in your dream field if you've already convinced yourself that it'll never happen. I hate to sound mean, especially toward someone that's feeling like ass already, but if you really want it, you have to go out and take it. There are many ways to get in to any industry you want. If school is too costly or too time consuming, you have to inch your way toward the industry you desire by working in a connected field. If location is the problem, take the plunge and move. If you're tied down by a relationship, break up. If it's kids, drop them off at the orphanage. Ok, maybe not. Take them with you.

Both. There's a few arenas in Calgary that have ice times during the day set aside for pick up hockey. You just show up and pay $5. Sometimes I find other friends who want to come out, or I just go out there by myself, it doesn't really matter to me, I just love being out on the ice.
