I used to live in neighbourhood where peoples water hoses were being stolen on a regular basis. Hardly a reason to leave Calgary.

Actually I think they have that kind of police presence in Edmonton. No wonder they have no crime there.

(honestly, we're being a little tough on Jolinar... it is a piss off when you get a dose of human societal reality).

Geez, my neighbour had his truck plugged in with the cord stretched across the street (and him parked in front of the neighbourhood mailbox - the postie couldn't have been happy) for over 24 hours. You must live in a bad section of town.
(and yeah, it sucks, but your rant kind of set you up for the abuse. all in good fun)

I love the off-topic battles that are going on lately. Great entertainment!
Sorry about your cords, J of M

Tangent: I had a lovely conversation with a petty thief a couple of weeks back who explained to me that most of the stuff he bought, he bought down in the skids from crackheads. His approach was simply to offer them $5 no matter what it was they were trying to sell, since $5 is the standard price for a hit, and crackheads really just measure value in hits, rather than dollars. Said he'd bought all sorts of good stuff, including an iPod video, still in the box.
If I see him, I'll ask about your extension cords. Is it worth $5 to you to get them back?

I had one stolen at the beginning of the winter, and yes, it does suck. I suppose leaving it outside does make it somewhat my own fault, but I have been doing that for years and no one ever stole it before..
I think I know who did it too. There is another person in my building who has one like mine that was stolen. I know most look the same, but mine had remnants of duct tape every metre or so from when I used it indoors and had to tape it to the ground. I thought about stealing it back but didn't because there is always the chance that it is just a coincidence that their's also has duct tape on it. I also figured that there was a chance that they had a similar one stolen and saw mine thinking I had stolen it from them - in which case, it's not a battle I would want to fight. Let them have it.

Jolinar ... smart remarks aside, I feel for you. I friggin hate petty thieves. And liars. I know it's bloody tough to nail petty thieves, but when they are caught I think they should have to do an hour's worth of community service for every dollar's worth of stuff they steal. Make 'em learn how to contribute to society instead of just being a bunch of low life slugs.

Ok first of all, I didn't say it was THE reason I was leaving. I was leaving long before somene stole my extension cords.
Second, I am moving to my own acreage far far away from Calgary where people who make an honest living can buy and own there property. So I don't think someone will be driving out to my place in -30C weather, fight with my dogs to steal my cords.
Thirdly, the reason I have three cords is because I have two roommates and the closest outdoor plug is a good 25 feet away from my driveway. That is also the reason why I can't put the ends in the hood as when one roommate leaves they plug the other car in.

Nope, you can lock a car and one should lock up their valuables. Plus, you'd be amazed how an extension cord zip-tied to an outlet post or through an eye hook by the outlet will prevent it from being stolen. You can pound sand with your indignation now.

Ha, reminds me of the time that I saw that my extension cord was stolen one morning. Truck wouldn't start because of it either so I was a little peeved. Since there was fresh snow, I started to do a little investigating.
Turns out the car 2 stalls down in the lot decided they liked to use my cord, so they unplugged it and plugged their own car into it. The tracks in the snow went to from my truck to their car and it still had a shopping bag tied around the cord (which I do to mark it and make it easier to find in the snow). I laughed, the tenant gave up a fight like it was actually is.
