The 15th overall pick becoming one of the best D-man of our generation isn't something that everyone saw coming, it's an incredible pick.

Scheifele's had the one breakout season, so if he can continue what he did this last year then yeah, you likely take him over Gaudreau. Before that he was on the periphery, although slowly improving his points totals every year. If he regresses, then you take Gaudreau.

After that Johnny and Kucherov are in a dead heat for 2nd overall IMO.

Sean Monahan is 6'3 200 pounds, do you think Sean can do the same?

Scheifele had as many points in 2015-2016 as Johnny had last year (61), so this was not his first decent year.
Scheifele is a big centre who can score, and any team would take him easily over the smaller winger.
Johnny is a very talented player, but he is what he is, and his size will always limit him somewhat.
This is not meant as a slight to Johnny, but Scheifele would be likely be in discussion of the top 10 forwards teams would take if they were starting a franchise tomorrow.

If Monahan can play the same as he did in the 2nd half of the season/playoffs for an entire season, he will have a beastly year. Although, I don't think he belongs in a draft steal thread since he was drafted 6th overall.

I'd put an asterisk next to Makarov's name, as he was a very well-known player. Cold War politics pushed all the Russian superstars to later rounds.
Cliff Fletcher was an innovative GM in many regards, and the one who broke the Russian player embargo. The franchise was incredibly lucky to have him in its formative years.

Yup. Even if Valimaki turned out to be Suter level everybody would be over the moon and that's still not the same impact that Karlsson has.

Yeah and it didn't take that long for his successors reduce it to shambles and send us plummeting into the dark years. With ole Trader Cliff playing some role in that when he pickpocketed Risebrough for a quarter of our roster in one fell swoop.
As for Gaudreau, I think a lot of our fans overrate him somewhat as a "franchise"-type player. He is skilled and special in what he does, but he will never be able to do what even an Iginla did for us in 2004, put the team on his back and take them deep into the playoffs. (and yeah, maybe Iggy gets too much credit for that, but he was the only real scoring threat on that team and nobody was able to stop him, at least that year)
I think this team is built well for the future but as long as Johnny Gaudreau is the centrepiece of their offense, I think a good team will always be able to defend that. The Flames need the other pieces to step up for them to truly be a team in Cup contention. The Backlund line is there and I think Monahan can take a step or two forward, and if Bennett can start fulfilling some of his potential, Gaudreau should have more freedom to burn teams with his abilities. And I think the x factor for the Flames is if the defensemen can join the rush more effectively... they have the personnel to do it, that was a big reason for their modest success in 2015 and I'd say they have better defensemen now than they did then (Russell and Wideman say hi).
Of course none of that is really relevant to whether Johnny was a steal in the draft. I don't think there's much question that he was. He's a homegrown star player that came out of the later rounds. Teams need to do that from time to time if they want to experience some glory years!

The article said that Gaudreau is a perennial 60-70 point player, and that he would likely be a top 10 pick in a 2011 re-draft.
I don't know, I think that's selling him short.
Mark Scheifele and Kucherov are the only players that would arguably be drafted ahead of him.

Am I the only one that thinks that Johnny's gonna blow Scheifle out of the water next season?
Its easy to rack up meaningless points on a non-playoff team, but hes also a 7th overall pick and a year older than Johnny.

They are both excellent players, and any fan should/would be happy to have either on their team.
For me though, all else being equal, I take the 6'3 210lb center over the 5'9 160lb winger.

Gotta thank Dale Hawechuck for getting in Chevys ear and talking him into taking Scheiffele. He's one of the most underrated players in the league.

Sure, in isolation. But we've got Monahan in the middle, Johnny makes an excellent complimentary piece.
He's like Kessel.
He's not going to carry your team, hes the guy thats going to kick your ass while you're too busy watching everyone else.

I'm just talking about a 2011 re-draft 6 years out, and to me a big center is more valuable than a small winger when they've both proven they're capable of an 80-ish point NHL season.
So not taking team need into account, if I'm conducting a re-draft I probably take Scheifele 1st and Gaudreau or Kucherov 2nd. In fact, I'm pretty sure I take Kucherov 2nd and then Johnny 3rd. Kucherov just potted 40 goals and 85 points.
