UGH
It looks far less likely than it would have been at the start of the season, but if Ortio gets claimed I'm gonna be super pissed.

The thing is that whoever claims him has to carry him on their roster. Is there a team right now that would be willing to do that? Possibly Winnipeg while Pavelec is out, if they don't want to call up Hellebuyck?

Can they send Hiller down for "conditioning"? Might buy a bit more time to trade someone.

I don't think the Flames would be able to give away one of their goalies at this point. What team in the NHL would want any of the 3 Flames goalies, keep in mind if someone claims Ortio they would have to keep him on the roster and couldn't just send him down and keep him as a project (I think)

Sureloss, how does your spidey sense feel about Hudler and Russell being out? Are you prepping a trade thread?

What team could reasonably see Ortio as an improvement to their NHL roster?

Seems strange after years of grooming Ortio that the Flames would throw him away so easily.

You can't waste a roster spot on a 3rd goaltender the head coach doesn't have any faith in. Ortio had his chance to impress and grab a spot and he failed to capitalize. If he gets claimed he gets claimed. I don't see it as a big deal as lots of teams have guys like this in their system that couldn't cut it in the NHL.

I don't wish injury to any player but I was a little excited for an opportunity to see a game without one of Russell or Wideman in the lineup. Team really played well defensively after Russell left the game.

I could see maybe the Oilers claiming him, just because.

While I shudder at myself saying this...I'm looking forward to seeing Gaudreau and Monahan with Hudler again.

Yeah that would be an epic fail of young goalie development..
Step 1: Keep goalie up because he is waiver exposed and has lots of potential
Step 2: Only give him one or two chances against powerhouse teams on the road (ie setup to fail)
Step 3: Let him rot on the bench for months
Step 4: Try and sneak him through waivers
Step 5: Claimed

I'm not. He's been a floater all season long. Even the points he has this season were a result of his great linemates. Gaudreau has had more success with Hudler off his line.

I think what has caused this situation is that neither of our vets have stepped up until recently to claim the #1 spot. If they had, it would have been easier to develop Ortio as the back up while getting rid of the loser goalie. They made an attempt by sending down Ramo but circumstances have changed again. It's a cluster ****.

Burke believes/believed Ortio will be claimed so I do not see them sending him down. I think that you buy as much time as possible and if Ramo continues to improve, you go with a Ramo/Ortio and send Hiller down.
If Hiller is claimed, it is unfortunate but not a huge loss.
If Ortio is claimed, it is unfortunate and a huge loss in the sense we have spent how long now grooming this guy. His 8 points last winter can be looked at as the difference in making the playoffs or not and now we give up on him?
Ramo doesn't get put on waivers unless he puts together 2/3 terrible games just before Hillers official return.

I would doubt they claim Ortio and send Hellebuyck back down. Honestly, he looks NHL ready.
Also, Winnipeg seems overstocked with good young goaltenders (Hutchinson, Hellebuyck, Comrie isn't heavily tested but is looking good). Adding Ortio to that mix would create the same problem as in Calgary unless they opt to ship out Pavelec or they don't plan to keep Ortio after the year.

He can't be sent down by whichever team would theoretically claim him, correct?

I don't understand the mentality of sending Ortio down.
In what little time he has played, he has been no better or worse than Hiller and Ramo (Ramo's last few games excluded). Only he is the only one yet to hit their peak years, is a much lower cap hit on a team that may need all the space possible going forward and is the only one we have spent years grooming.
I think it is way less likely Hiller is claimed than Ortio based on cap alone.
