“When (Paul) Byron was recalled to Calgary, (Wahl) played second-line centre,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said via email. “He was not productive over three games (both offensively and not as strong defensively as we wanted) and was a healthy scratch against San Antonio. His ice time in Abbotsford is based on merit.”

Wahl collected five goals and seven points in a five-game stint with the ECHL’s Grizzlies, but he had no points and was minus-2 in five games with the Heat.

“Montreal was in need of a centre in Hamilton, and we felt assigning him to Hamilton, where he will play, was better for his continued development than sending him back to Utah. He needs to play, but we are not going to deviate from our merit system. This assignment will enable him to play at a higher level than ECHL.”

I like the move, if only for the fact that Wahl gets more time in the AHL. Wahl playing in the top 6 in Hamilton > Wahl playing in the top 6 in Utah.

If it turns out he's lost his spot in the organization in the next couple of years, so be it.

Hope Wahl does well and another team notices. I don't think he has been treated well......

He missed a lot of time due to injury, don't see how that was management's fault. If he wants to play top 6 minutes on a winning team in Abbotsford then he has to earn it, nothing will be given to him on a silver platter just because he is a 2nd round pick.

If Wahl was a healthy scratch in Abbotsford/Utah then I would agree maybe he is not being given a chance but Feaster found him a place so he can get the playing time and hopefully get back in our lineup and contribute.

finally registered his first point for Hamilton yesterday, now has 1 assist in 9 games with Hamilton. I'd be interested in his ice-time, but the AHL obviously does not provide TOI stats ...

Good to hear. Hamilton looks pretty weak this season, so hopefully it starts to snowball for him. I'm also hoping he plays a really strong in the next two games against the Heat, show that he's getting back on track with development.

Has his first 2 goals for the season tonight for Hamilton. Game isn't over so fingers crossed for the hat trick.

Wahl with an assist tonight. I am really hoping he keeps contributing. I think he could have been a great help to the Heat but......like all the guys... you need to have opportunities. Hopefully he keeps getting them with Hamilton!

Pretty ravaged Heat line up. Might they try and bring him back soon? Or is it top-6 or bust for him?

He's there for the rest of the year now. Once you loan a player out, it's for the year. I think in Wahl's case, it's top-6 or bust for sure. I just don't think his size will allow him to do anything else.

So is Wahl being loaned out because there is not a top 6 spot for him with the Heat currently and they want him get those kind of minutes and PP?

While there is likely a top 6 spot for him on the heat at this moment, when he was loaned out, there wasn't one.

I havn't seen him much with the Heat but I recall him being a real solid two-way guy with Spokane. Unless those skills have completely evaporated I don't see why he can't play on any lines beyond the top two... unless you're of the opinion that you have to throw your body around to play on any line other then the top two... in which case I just disagree.

I didn't think Mitch Wahl was that small.

He's not BIG, but 6' isn't small.

His weight though, looked at three different websites one lists him as 175lbs, one has him at 190 lbs, and yet the third has him at 200lbs.

I watch all the games and while I do think Aliu has some strong points, I have noticed that he doesn't like to pass the puck which is a bit annoying.
