The Rangers will regret this contract. Maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but soon, and for the rest of it.

If the cap goes up to 90 million, as the Friedman article yesterday said, most teams won't be able to go near it, but the Rangers and Leafs will. 5 years from now this won't be a problem for them unless they have to trade him.

He has consistently been the best goalie of the league - some goalies have better seasons now and then, but Lundqvist is continually up there.
With that being said - simply too much for a goalie, even him. At the very least, the Rangers don't have to worry about a goalie for a long time now. May not be having the greatest season, but he always does well, and I would expect him to rebound. Just too much for too long for any goalie in this league, even him.

He's one of the best goaltenders in the league and it's probably the going rate considering money isn't an issue for the Rangers and the salary cap is expected to go up. I think the term is too long but it seems teams are signing these long term deals with an "eyes closed" approach to the repercussions on the tail half of the deal in that they will deal with it when it comes and truthfully many of these GM's signing players to these long term deals won't be around to deal with the aftermath.

As for cap hit i don't think its going to matter. The cap is going way up and i would not be surprised if they buy out Richards.

imo it's 1.5 million off, but well, he's a good regular season goaltender, haven't proven yet in the playoffs, also they have Talbot in the organization who's been pretty good this year (Better than Lundqvist tbh). I don't see the logic behind this monster contract. (Other than wanting him to stay, but 8.5 million for 7 years desperate? wow)

Awful deal. I'm sure it would have been a 15 year deal had it not been for the new rules.

Lundqvist is solid in the playoffs, when his team can't score goals it's hard for him to win.

Sure, but when the pressure's been on him, He's not been good. The only big game I remember he played well was Torino 2006 gold medal game.

The Rangers also have Del Zotto and Kreider up as RFAs this year. If the salary cap doesn't go up as much as projected, they may have a tough time but will probably be fine.

Yep, his .920 save % and 2.208 GAA is the reason the Rangers haven't won in the playoffs

Numbers aren't everything. He rarely shows up for big games.

The countdown to the next lock-out is on, and has been for a while. How people can side with the owners when all we see if a recurring cycle is beyond me.
The owners cry poor, get pretty much everything they want and hockey comes back. Within weeks we start seeing massive contracts handed out like candy and it becomes more and more frequent until the owners start crying poor again, CBA deal ends, owners lock players out.
Repeat cycle.

He's worth the coin.
Yeah, the term's a bit long. But with the cap increasing, this won't be quite the anchor that many are assuming.

What would that be in todays dollars I wonder considering inflation and the cost of living increase though.
