Low risk that comes with an $8M price tag. I like a good bargain, but it doesn’t makes sense if the Flames want to get younger. Best case, he revives career… and helps the Flames continue to be a bubble team for another year? Pass.

Several of those guys aren't eligible for movement protection. I believe you can only have an NTC or NMC for years in which you would be eligible for UFA status.

In all fairness Washington as a whole has been fairly grim this season.

If dumping one year of Monahan at $6M is worth a (potentially very good) first, taking on this contract has to be much more than that. There's no universe where it makes sense to do it for free.

Flames should take this contract on the same way they took on Kuzmenko. If it comes in a similar deal like the Lindy deal, they need to take that risk.

Well I'm not going to hunt through them all, but I know for certain that Tkachuk and Fox both have movement protection on the tail-end of their contracts.

7.8 for one more year? Why not.
Are they really making room for Hanifin?

It will cost a first to get rid of him. My guess is he’s loaned out to Europe .

I might claim him if I was Conroy. Only one more year at $7.8 million. If he does terribly next season, the contract is up at the end of the year. But if he returns to being a 55 point centre like last season, you might be able to retain (like they did on Tanev) and get assets from him. The only downsides I see are if you think he’d be a negative influence on your youngsters OR if you anticipate getting young centres like Mercer for Markstrom or Lundell for Hanifin. In the latter situation, Kuznetsov could take ice time away from a young centre you want to play lots.

Man I dont get why anyone would even consider claiming him when we had to pay a 1st to get rid of Monahan and Kuznetzov is in a worse state

Flames don't have the cap space to claim him unless they send somebody to the AHL.

Paying a 1st to dump Monahan is one of the dumbest trades of the last 5 years in the NHL and shouldn't be used as a measuring stick.

Wait…wasn’t Washington just reportedly interested in Hanifin? I now see what other posters mean by a Lindholm like trade. Hanifin for 1st + good prospect + Kuznetsov + lesser prospect + mid-round pick. I personally would love Cristall. RW. From Western Canada. 44 NHLe in draft year (with great line). 43 NHLe this year (leading team by 21 points).

Claiming him on waivers would be a great way for a gm to get fired. Taking on that big of a cap hit for free for a player that's been all kinds of suck lately is just dumb. If Wash want to help him move on, they gotta pay....a lot.

even if you are measuring the Monahan trade as a pure cap dump (which is what Treliving thought it was), picking up 1.2 years of Kuznetzov at $7.8 million makes zero sense
