I am excited to see the Heat on a full time basis. A line of Sven - KK - Walter is intriguing. What happens with the goalie situation if there is a lockout? Irving and Taylor take the two spots and Brust the odd man out?

On the Heat Kolanos normally plays wing, which is weird because he's listed as a centre. Walter was the Heat's #1C last season.
The goalie situation will likely be what you said. However, Irving needs to go through waivers to play with the Heat this season.

So there is a fair chance that Irving won't play if there is a lockout then? Would the Flames risk losing him?

Hard to say if they'd lose him. I can't remember how active the waiver wire was during '05.

I would personally like to see what kind of chemistry Baertschi has with Reinhart. He and Nemisz showed fairly good chemistry already at the NHL level. On the other hand, Walter is basically the Tanguay of the Heat, so he'll be the best set up man for Baertschi and Kolanos.
I'm going to be really interested to see the Heat training camp in a few weeks because Ward will have some line combos together. I want to see who he's pairing together.

I really think Nemisz will be centering the top line this year in Abby, it seems to me like they have been working on getting him ready for that role before he steps into it in Calgary full time. I could see him centering Baertschi and Kolanos with hope he and Sven and show some chemistry.

Will Backlund be able to play in Abbotsford at all?
He can't afford to miss any time. I imagine, though, that he can't since he would have to go through waivers.
The SEL won't accept partial contracts, so what does a player like him do?

ECHL and the Swiss league offered contracts with NHL out clauses in the past I believe. I would assume the German pro leagues would do the same

Am I missing something? I would think that with no active CBA, that there would be no waiver, and therefore no risk of loss. Is that something written into the contract itself then?

Any thoughts to which current Flames may join the Heat when the lockout occurs.

Wait, Byron has to clear waivers? Is this due to how many pro games he's played?

Yes, that and how many years it's been since he signed his first pro deal.

Wow, I didn't know Byron needed to clear waivers either. That really really sucks.

NHL and NHLPA agreed to put a special waiver period in place, starting right now until September 15...
That way, veteran players of the AHL, with 2 way contract, are going to have the right to play for their farm team.
They won't have to be put on re-entry waivers if they are call back 3 days before the start of the season.

That is good news, good move by both the NHL and NHLPA. So looks like Irving will most likely be in Abby to start the AHL season.

As I understand it they still have to clear waivers. They can just be assigned and are exempt from reentry waivers.
Previously you couldn't assign players until Sept 15. They made that earlier due to the expiring CBA and removed the re-entry requirements.

Flames assigned defenders Chris Breen, T.J. Brodie, James Martin, Brady Lamb and forwards Sven Baertschi, Roman Horak, Bryan Cameron, Carter Bancks, Gaelan Patterson, David Eddy, Lance Bouma, Max Reinhart, Ryan Howse, Turner Elson, Ben Street, Greg Nemisz, Michael Ferland and Mitch Wahl to Abbotsford.
Akim Aliu, Paul Byron, Joe Piskula, Ben Walter and Krys Kolanos are on waivers and will be assigned to Abbotsford once they clear.
No Irving. I guess it's Brust and Taylor in Abby for the time being.
