Police said the 46-year-old was found dead on Sunday in the bathroom of his West Village apartment. Officials say the cause of death appears to be an apparent drug overdose.
Hoffman won the 2005 Academy Award for best actor for his role in the film Capote. He also received three Oscar nominations for best supporting actor.
Other film credits include The Hunger Games, The Big Lebowski, Moneyball, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Hoffman suffered with drug addiction in the past, checking into rehab last year to deal with an addiction to prescription pills and heroin.
Awful news. This man was one of the 5 best actors working IMO. Just a master of his craft.

One story I read stated he'd battled heroin addiction. Hadn't heard that before
I had no idea he had drug problems. That's a real shame. Hard to understand why an actor with money and a lot going for them would need to do heroin but everyone is human.
Such a shame, he was riveting in any scene he was in. Charlie Wilson's war was so good, because of him. same with Scent of a Woman and the claymation, Mary and Max
