I mean the Leafs were a top team in most metrics before this year where they struggled defensively, most likely attributed to the decline of Giordano and Brodie, no true starter, and cycling inexperienced guys into that d core.
The team was able to force a game 7 in the series without their best player. In the end, Bostons best player came through in Game 7 and Toronto's did not. There was no true starter this year, question marks on defence and a mix of forwards who disappear in the playoffs. Really, no part of that roster could Keefe hang his hat on dependability wise other than Matthews who was sick most of the playoffs.
It just really annoys me seeing guys like Brad Treliving come in and fire a coach for not working through the GMs mistakes of not addressing the glaring weaknesses on the roster. Neither Jon Cooper nor Jared Bednar won their cups til years 7 and 6 respectively. I think teams should focus more around building a culture with one guy than cutting the cord every three years cause you didn't finish better than 31 other teams.

Treliving is such a terrible GM. Thank god he's now with the Leafs and can screw over that franchise for years to come.

I've heard Shanahan calls all shots anyway. Whoever gets it is basically a vessel.

Huska is now the 17th-longest serving NHL head coach. When Keefe is hired in Pittsburgh, Huska will be in the top half of the league -- and he still hasn't been on the job for a year.

In Toronto, Treliving won’t be hamstrung by ownership that’s too cheap to spend on a legitimate coach who’s not from Viking AB.

Just to soft as a roster...particularly up front.
But every GM gets to hire at least one, usually 2, of their own choices for HC.
Berube, should he be that choice, wont fair much differently IMO because of the construction of that club as it is now.
|
Yeah I agree with you as well that it isn't entirely a Keefe issue and the roster construction by Dubas is bad. It'll also take time to fix that roster due to all the clauses - Tre is going to have to be willing to get 0.50 on the dollar on some of these if he wants to have change come faster.

Ha, wish I knew. Back in the 90's Sliver signed me up to their fan club so one of them called my house and left a message with my Mom. That's as close as I got to them.

Coach is the easy scapegoat.
Wonder if Shanahan keeps his job.
Treliving probably gets his own coaching hire before he's on the block.

Keefe is a smug little bag of dicks. That punchable look he had on his face during that challenge vs us last year...

I agree with that, but for a guy who had to know that his job was on the line, and that losing potentially means material roster changes, you would have thought he would find a little fire.
That, and the "teams let the Leafs beat themselves" quote both seem to speak to a guy who was just out of answers with this group. He's likely tried everything, and nothing seems to get through. I don't know if they are cursed, lazy or just generally indifferent, but there is a serious culture problem in that organization. If it was me, I would have fired Shanny first, but I am also very happy for the Leafs to run it back and continue to choke it up with the regularity of the tides.
EDIT: Just watched his farewell video on Twitter, which someone more tech savvy than me will post here shortly, I am sure. My respect level went way up after watching that. He'll get another coaching gig for sure, and I would be happy for a guy like that to coach the Flames.

A lot easier to do when you're still getting paid for 2 more years.
