From what I can remember the last 3 winters have hit pretty late, and lingered long past their welcome. Well into November when it really got cold, and late April for the ice to come off the water at the earliest.
To contrast 4 years ago, I remember having breakfast outside in shorts and t-shirt 3 Saturday mornings in April.
Global warming, the edges of the seasons are going to get a lot longer and more varied before the -30 days completely disappear.

Last year there was an early snow and cold snap in late october, was pretty tame through christmas, it thawed out completely in january and there were maybe two weeks in february when it was proper frigid. Spring was pretty well on schedule, and everything was greening before Mother's day so you can make a case that spring arrived early.
Given what's shaping up to be an unprecedented El Nino, it looks like this winter will be even more tame and tolerable than last. Not even sure we're going to see the -20s until january at this rate (knock on wood).

The thing about subjective measurements is that they are usually wrong. This spring was one of the warmest in history. In May this year, the lowest temperature was 3°C, first time in recorded history that Calgary stayed above 0°C for all of May.

A brown Christmas might be common in Calgary but in much of Alberta (North and central) it is rare.

Agreed, felt like things were drier in general back then. I seem to recall lots of brown Christmases and brown Augusts too.

We have to drive to Taber for a funeral/memorial tomorrow, so I'm just glad there's not a blizzard/ice/snow.

I'm predicting that there will be discussions about significant water levels/shortages next summer. I hope I'm wrong.

In southern Alberta for sure. If we don't get a huge snowpack (which isn't predicted) or substantial spring rains it's going to be dire.

They are already happening. The AB government just put an RFP out for watershed modeling for 2024.

Not sure about the Bow but they need to be a lot more strict with the irrigation farmers further south. Some districts are like the Old West with ridiculous allotments and poor oversight.

Also, anyone know what the heck reddit did to make it impossible to just grab an image url?

What does the graphic for 1984 & 2004 mean? It was a brown Christmas, but some light snow fell on Christmas Day?
2004 was my first of 9 straight Christmas' not living in Calgary, so I wouldn't even know, just curious.

Yeah pretty much. Less than 2cm, but it snowed on Christmas day.

I’m the first to bitch about the cold, but this has been an awesome run of weather.

If we don’t get snow, next summer is going to be an absolute ####-show of forest fires, smoke, fire restrictions, etc.
