I never heard him say he wanted to sign long term. All he said was he didn’t want anyone traded mostly talking Frolik because of his deal.
Matthew said he wanted to stay in Calgary and a few months later he gave a list of teams he would play for that didn’t include Calgary.
Matthew loves to say a lot of things.
He’s gone, he’s great, it sucks but move on. That’s the business of the game. No need to make up stories of this and that.
Just because you never heard it doesn't make it not true. I heard him saying it on the Spittin chiclets podcast.
He wanted to sign long term when the Flames offered him a bridge contract. The Flames told him for them to keep the team together it was the best move for the team.
He was willing to sign for 8 years. He said it himself.

Tkachuk likes to talk and stir the pot.
He sat at the podium and said he did not want anyone traded, so they went with the 3 year deal.
He was also offered 8 year at 10.5 a season to stay. He wanted to be traded. You’re going to turn down generational wealth? It was not like we paid him nothing. He has the highest AAV in Flames history when he signed. Not sure how joining Iginla for that honour pisses someone off. Highest paid player on the team.

This is all true. But don't see why he would tell the truth on everything else (and you believe him on that) and then lie that he wanted to sign long term.
He signed a 3 year bridge deal because a bridge deal is all that was offered to him.
Treliving handled the situation horribly with hindsight. Most teams try to lock up their stars to 8 year deals even when they still haven't proven themselves.
Jack Hughes is a good comparison. Most people were shocked the devils signed him long term for that money so early and now his contract looks like a steal.
A good GM would have made sure they signed their player to 8 years.
Please go back and look at that summer. It was all bridge deals and 5 or 6 year deals. No one signed for 8 and him and his agent are not setting that precedent either.
Tkachuk was never signing for 8 years. He can all he wants now.

Uncertainty in calgary? He was offered 8/10.5. He wanted to test the RFA. Why would he be uncertain unless he waiting for them to fire Sutter.
Whe he talked to Zito he knew Florida was his choice. So he handed the Flames a list of bunch teams, and was almost traded to Carolina. Would that make Carolina the route he always wanted to go?
No one that summer signed a 8 year deal. It was never going to be Tkachuk either. All the talk around everyone was bridge deals or a shorter deals.
I did read the full quotes. You keep mentioning the time he about to become a UFA. We are talking about when he was still RFA and signed the bridge deal.

Which RFA comparable can you show me that signed 8 year deals?

It was the storyline of that draft class, and it hasn’t happened since. We got pinched in a weird circumstance.
They didn’t go into the offseason wanting to trade Huberdeau. The Flames didn’t go into the offseason looking to trade Tkachuk.
A player asked for a trade and picked the Panthers as a destination.
It worked out for the Panthers cool. It still wasn’t their plan, a rare opportunity presented itself.
They may well have looked at wanting to trade Huberdeau, they weren’t talking extension with him. They didn’t like the look of an 8 year Huberdeau extension.
You keep changing the goal posts. And are confusing RFA with when he set to become UFA. Not sure what your point is in this.
You first said Tkachuk didn't wanna sign long term. That's not true so not sure what you're arguing now.
Please go back and find which players signed long term deals 8 years in 2019, when Matthew was ready to sign.
He was a RFA. I’m not moving goal posts anywhere.
In 2019 when he signed he said this was the best option for him and not have his teammates traded. Had he signed a 5 year deal he would have been traded anyways in because he wokld have left via UFA.
Look at how he is twisting things around. He called his future in Calgary uncertain. He was offered 10.5 for 8 years, but was uncertain apparently. So he went to the RFA period.

If you read the full quote you’d know that when he said “long term” he also said “5-6 years”. And that number would have started at 9 which was nowhere near what he’d performed to.

Look at the RFA players. Only Kyle Connor signed a long term deal at 7 years.
The rest range from 2 years and 5.
Even Tkachuk is quoted in the article talking about a 5 year deal.
A 5 year deal would have led us down the Gaudreau path. 5 years at 9.5 at the time would have been bad and the way he performed would have been crippling
Glad Cooper is calling out the league and the refs.
For what? His boneheaded challenges? He was 0 for 4 on challenges in the regular season too. Maybe he should be calling out his video staff and his own decision making.

Did you see the "no goals"? Both pretty weak af. I'd be pissed if it was against the Flames.
And like Cooper said, the league wants more goals but then makes calls like this. Panthers deserved to be up 3-1 and most likely win the series anyways, but a bad call is a bad call and should be pointed out.
