Look, I dislike the Oilers and everything Oilers as much as the next guy. But these guys actually came across as pretty Petty.

I mean I know that Ryan Smyth was over rated. At time Oiler fans had him in the same stratosphere as Iginla. And they over relied way too much on the whole Captain Canada thing for a guy that took part in pretty much what is looked at as the international version of the Millhouse Cup. But at the end of the day Ryan clearly loved Edmonton and was emotionally attached to it, and it crushed him to be moved out over what was basically chump change by the idiots running the Oilers at the time.

But those two came across as small and a bit idiotic to me.

Oh my gawd!!! There is 4 pages of butthurt about this on HF. People cancelling their subscriptions to Sportsnet. People crying about how Edmonton gets no respect on Sportsnet. WTF??? They get a hell of a lot of respect from Sportsnet, and why? Because they won a ####ing lottery!!!

I have to agree. Oilers or not, that was classless garbage.

I think that's a story you tell at a bar with your buddies, not on television. Agreed it's pretty petty.

Whitney, armstrong...

Well guys, neither of you can hold Ryan Smyth's jock strap when evaluating careers.

Ryan Smyth was the only thing respectable about that organization. I hated the oilers but always respect Smyth. Heart and soul player who wasn't very skilled but had more heart than all three of those guys.

Yeah, that was pure garbage from the NHL's biggest broadcaster. Just trashy stuff to be mocking a great player like that.

Low class maybe but candid and goes to show how Smith's emotional outburst was received amongst plenty of players in the NHL. This is why you probably see NHL players hold back and give cliche interviews as opposed to other sports such as the NFL and NBA.

As a fellow hater of all things Oiler, that was pretty bush league.

Whats the over/under on Spector coming out with something on this?

Such an uncoordinated "funny" story/segment there.

I get the feeling that it was just a way for Armstrong to shoe-horn into the broadcast "I used to play in the NHL!!! Remember???".

Spector actually retweeted and agreed with a fan that said that Armstrong and Whitney have no right to trash Smyth like that, and that considering the careers they both had, they aren't even worthy of holding Smyth's jock.

Just checked his twitter so that I could link to it in this post, but Spector has since deleted it!

Ryan Whitney actually came off way worse, imo. Armstrong's story was ill-advised but Ryan's reaction was like a dumb jock at the bar who reacts like a Neanderthal to anything sentimental.

"Seriously??? Get a load of mr. waterworks, what a loser!!!".

Not surprised with Ryan Whitney. He is just abrasive and arrogant on social media as well. His career was cut short so he feels the need to make fun of others to make himself look better when in fact it makes him look like a loser. He is just awful on twitter and his radio shows as well.

Can't comment on Armstrong as I don't know much about him off the ice.

Meh, I didn't think it was too bad. A lot of people on here made fun of Smyth after that (I think the image is still used as some people's avatar).
