I was having a beer with a fella involved in rugby provincially and nationally today. The number he gave was a 18% decline in senior player across the country in the last 5 years.

With the Brumbies 18-12 loss to the Blues today, Australian Super Rugby teams are now 0-15 against New Zealand teams. Also the Blues now have 22 points compared to 18 for the Brumbies but due to the conference format if the playoffs started today the Blues would be out and the Brumbies would be in.
Australian rugby is in a very dark place at the moment and I would not be surprised if they don't win a game against New Zealand all year including getting destroyed in the Bledisloe.

Speaking of league, it was a week off for the NRL with international tests taking place and three players and one team chairmen were caught using cocaine. This included two NZ players who after losing to Australia were photographed outside a Canberra nightclub at 4am doing lines off a dealer's phone. Stay classy!
Moving onto Union it was another week of losses for the Aussie Super Rugby teams. After the Reds loss to the Chiefs and the Waratahs loss to the Blues they are now 0-17 against NZ teams. In fact other than the Reds week 1 win versus the Sharks, the only Australian wins are against other Australian teams.

Yeah epic try. The Stormers had a great chance to win being down by 5 with 6 minutes left and the ball deep in Canes territory yet ended up losing 41-22.

I used to play thirds but I had to stop because of the time commitment that they wanted. I have two young kids and they wanted me to practice on tuesday/thursday evening, play friday night and be available to come off the bench for the seconds on Saturday. If I missed practice there was a good chance I wouldn't get in the game on the Friday or I would only get 10 minutes at the end. Eff that.
When I started playing thirds it was rolling subs and a lot of fun. Not much fun any more.

Yeah there is no need for that. I use to make an effort to show up on Thursday, half to get a run in and joke around followed by a beer. I have been lucky both my clubs that I have played 3rds for are understanding.
This is the first year since I was 17 that I haven't played rugby. Now at 46 I am gonna try some old boys to see what that is like.

This is impressive, a Canadian signing in the best competition in rugby, with one of the premier sides in the competition. Also, as an aside, if you get the chance watch some Mitre 10 Cup rugby. It is great stuff. It is a step below Super Rugby and used as a show case to win contracts. There is some really exciting rugby played.
Awesome, go the bay! They haven't been a very good side the last couple of years though. But that's huge for Ardron, I think the last Canadian to play in super rugby was Jeb Sinclair in 2012 so it's been a while.

It was a let down for Canada after their 1st ever win in Singapore. They were passed by Scotland are now 8th overall with one event to play. It looks like they will be finishing somewhere from 7th to 9th.

I had forgotten about Sinclair. I think he was in Capetown, with the Stormers, and played for WP in the Currie Cup.
Local connection, but Sinclair was born in Red Deer Alberta.
I know a few Sinclairs in Red Deer, I wonder if they are related.

Super Rugby is in Fiji tonight. The lucky Fijians get to see the two of the top 3 teams in the league go head to head as the 11-0 Crusaders take on the 9-1 Chiefs.
I hate the Saders but their undefeated run so far is a great story in an otherwise disappointing Super Rugby season.

I would love to see an "Islander" team in Super Rugby.

It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that Mavericks Committee has come to the conclusion that the Senior Women’s team will be cancelled for the 2017 season due to lack of interest, certainly not lack of effort on the coaches part, and will hope to pick it up again in 2018. We, in conjunction with Rugby Alberta, will look at identifying coaches and players for the 2018 at the conclusion of the 2017 Senior Women’s season and will work diligently through the off-season to try to bring back this program. We will also be looking at potentially running a U20 women’s program for 2018 with hopes of retaining our up and coming U18 women.
Thank you to all involved.
