‘What I would say is if [Holtz] changes as a player, then it will change as ice time.
‘He has not had a good year. I don't believe it's because he's been on the fourth line. The core values you have as a player – strong on walls, puck play, puck management, are you turning pucks over, can you be better in certain situations. It's not about goals… It's the other areas, the game within the game, which I say a lot, it matters. Managing the lines, turnovers. Those areas have to be way better.’
|
(As reported on msn.com)
He pretty much had nothing good to say about Holtz, and only slightly softened his remarks by saying ‘a lot of players’ were failing in similar ways.

Fitzgerald seems to have some anger issues.
Also looks like he took the deal falling apart out on Holtz.

I think the dream of landing a big return for Markstrom is over now. It may have never even been a possibility.
There will be more options in the summer and there is a good chance his numbers take a nosedive playing in front of the current team.
I'd really love to know exactly what Fitz offered for him prior to the deadline. I suspect it wasn't anywhere near as good as what we were speculating on here.

I bought the 1st + Holtz rumour because it was flowing from a few spots.

Yeah I could see it, probably a protected 1st though. I hate to say it, but I think it'll be a miracle to get that now.

The last update was that the Flames wanted Mercer and a higher pick, and it's harder to get higher than a 1st and NJ doesn't have a 2nd this year so I imagine the offer was Holtz + 2024 3rd.

Even the 1st alone this year may have been a good return for Markstrom. in hindsight.

You can be sure it would have been protected. So really, New Jersey's 1st next year. With decent goaltending, I'm guessing that pick will be solidly in the 20s overall.

Let’s say the Flames enter the draft with the picks they have and Markstrom. Let’s also say the Devils end up with a pick in the range of 12-15 and Iginla is on the board.
How crazy are some flames fans going to be if Markstrom isn’t dealt for that pick?
Just a thought…

Why? There are 3 predominant goalies that could be available this summer. The ask for Markstrom was Mercer and a high pick. The ask for Saros is Mercer, a prospect, and a high pick. The other goalie is Ullmark who seems hell bent on staying in Boston. Next year he has a 15 team no trade and you can bet he is putting teams like LA and NJ on it. So if the Bruins move Swayman instead guess what they are going to want? Mercer plus even more than Markstrom and Saros. The #1 goalie market right now is the most expensive as far as asking price goes, if NJ wants a bonafide #1 guy it is going to cost them at least Dawson Mercer.

My info was Holtz and a 2025 1st that was protected.

Seems like a pretty good deal. Flames management must be pretty low on Holtz.

It sounds like a lot of young players. Some who eventually got it and some who didn't. Hotlz is a talent I'd be willing to bet on

TBF to Sven, if it wasn't for Patrick "Imma run my teammates through the wall" Selloff. We are very likely having a very different conversation about the player.

The Devils are also pretty low on Holtz, this was only a few days before the trade deadline:
https://www.nj.com/devils/2024/03/de...outputType=amp

Edit: didn’t notice the exact quote was posted above, whoops

Holtz IMO, is gonna end up like Eli Tolvanen, a pariah until he gets to another team and then, oh look, there's a really good player there

Adding Holtz is like Calgary adding pre-charges Dube in a trade. I think that's his level, plus he's a pure winger, whereas I think Conroy is really targeting a centre. Kid's got one more point than Zary in almost double the games. I suspect he's a second rounder in a redraft, whereas Mercer goes top 5.

Maybe. Or maybe it was Hartley. Or maybe he just didn't have it.
Funny, that 2011 draft was full of Cs and Ds in the first round and Calgary got one of only 3 LWs taken (and not even the worst one). Missed out on Miller, Daneault.
