It is one of my favorites and I was going there for many years when we lived in Marda Loop. I now go to Thai Thien Sub downtown because of the location and it is on par with Thai Tai plus the owner is a super nice guy and weirdly remembers every customer.

One of the things I miss most after being diagnosed Celiac in 2016 is a good Viet Sub.

A couple years ago Pho City started doing GF ones with Care Bakery buns but it's just not quite the same. Pretty good substitute though.

That and Korean food are the two things that are pretty much impossible now.

The Thai Thien guy is awesome. And his memory is mind boggling to me. The second time we ever went, he remembered exactly what we ordered the first time, which was at least a couple of months earlier. Right down to the bubble tea flavours and also who had pearls vs. lychee jelly.

The place is always busy, even on Saturdays. Tasty little family run place. For those unfamiliar it is the Grain Exchange building. Easiest parking is on 9th Avenue across from the Palliser.

The bread is probably 65% of the sub's value. Most important part.

Also, anyone know where you can buy retail viet sub buns (baguette)? Grocery stores have the worst bread on earth. COBS is a little too wonderbready.

Calgary needs more good bakeries of the french style.
Black Sheep on 17th does baguettes

I go once or twice a month and it is my go to for a bite before a Flames game. I've started ordering ahead on the app because it can be a 15 or 20 minute wait otherwise.

I swear to god I've been hearing about Eau Claire shutting down since the day after they built it in the early 90s.

It's been demolished 15 times now, and rebuilt.

That place is very good. Last couple of times I had it the bread was super-fresh. Amazing.

More then a few memories of the place from the 90s and early 2000s, besides going there in my late teens and into my 20s when I worked in the north part of downtown.IMAX movies, various corporate things The Garage, the candy store, hammered at Kelsey's of all places. Also a pretty big bar fight spilled outside of the Hard Rock during the World Police and Fire Games between some drunk firefighters.

But one lasting memory, when I worked in that part of downtown in 2004, was getting the last red Flames jersey at the FanAttic, as it was in the SE corner. It was Iginla crested, and got it for the wife, at lunch time, the day after the Flames beat Vancouver in Game 7. I think the staff working was a bit upset, maybe they had it pegged for someone else, but also because everyone coming in after looking for a jersey, they had to tell them they were out.

From that point on, if you recall, there was a shortage of red jerseys for a few weeks. They fired up the factory (jerseys were changing the next year so they didn't have more inventory) and new ones came out as CCM jerseys, where the original red were branded Koho.

One of the many locations the Fan Attic had dabbled in, from Chinook Center, to Eaton Center, the Airport, the Eau Claire one seemed the oddest spot.

Maybe because the sub ( Banh Mi ) is an actual Vietnamese street food?

Please tell me that you've had Viet Sub in your life.

Pho, Vermicelli, Banh Mi - either way, anyway is perfect.

Just got back, decided to try them again since my beloved Thai Tai is gone, or moving. They're ok, not as good as Thai Tai but fine. I will say they use peppers with a bit more heat, that's nice.

I gotta find out what's going on with Thai Tai.

I was being quite glib, but I've never really thought about it. I would have guessed it was a fusion.

I tend to stick to the same restaurant (Basil) - their vermicelli and pho are indeed perfection.

We are all ignoring this fact that the reason that place survived was King Motherfataing Tut. How in the hell did king tut store stay open let alone the disaster of a mall.

It was king tut. Dollarama King Tut museum.
