Any flames fan that's ever played Texas hold 'em before knows how frustrating this oiler's draft lottery win is... this feels like going all in with pocket Aces before the flop and some idiot calls you with an off-suite 7 & 2 thinking that it's a good hand cause he's never played poker before in his life. Then a pair of 2's show up on the turn and river cards and you lose. And the idiot across from you didn't even realize it till you explain that he won. Then he'll go on for years and years about how good he is at poker.

That is how I felt when that card flipped over showing gold behind the oiler symbol. It's disgusting.

If you go back through the history of the Draft, only about 20% of first overall picks have gone on to win the Cup with the team that drafted them.

Oilers won 4 Stanley Cup early 80s. In the last few years, Oilers won 4 NHL Draft Lottery... Now that's what you call Dynasty!!

Love how bitter Tim Murray is. "I'm disappointed for our fans". How's that sound Jack?

Dallas has better fans in my opinion. Colorado is the definition of a fairweather fanbase. They were gifted a Stanley Cup contender when the Av's came to town, and they filled the building. The Av's are completely irrelevant when they're not a contender in that city, like completely.

The organization pulled the wool over the eyes of everyone with their embarrassingly fake sellout streak, until reporters started coming out with articles laughing at how an arena with entire sections, yes sections of empty seats could be called a sellout.

The reality is they are near the bottom of the league in fan support most years, it's not uncommon to see 13 - 14k gates most nights there.

There's that one scene from Oil Change where Tambellini and his management team are discussing whether to take Hall or Seguin. They conclude the meeting by saying something like "This is a once in a lifetime situation... It's an critical decision: it's not like we want to be picking first overall every year". They laugh. They're so much smarter than everyone else. Lowe pats him on the back.

Five years later.

this is why the easiest fix they have to make is limiting top picks

i.e you should only be able to pick 1st overall every 5 years, cant pick in the top 3 in back to back years etc.

The last thing the Oilers needed was another top 6 forward.

Suddenly their fans are so pie-eyed that they don't even care that their team is still a dumpster fire.

Gives MacTavish and Lowe another few years of not addressing what the team really needs...just enough for McDavid to burn through his ELC.

Then Brian Burke gets his revenge on Kevin Lowe after all these years and the Flames (fresh off their Stanley Cup Victory) sign McDavid to an offer sheet.

After 5-14-6 were picked, the #leafs had the highest chance of getting McDavid heading to last ball: TOR (4x), BUF (3x), EDM (2x) CAR, CBJ.
Oh man, can you imagine if they would have done the drawing live and updated the odds after each ball was drawn? The joy to sorrow for Leafs fans would have almost made Edmonton winning it worth it. Almost.

This doesn't help the Oilers. They haven't done a stellar job at scouting for the past dozen years. In fact, since central scouting has been making their first pick every year for the last 6 my guess is they have a couple chimps throwing feces at the wall to make their picks.

No..no...that's not fair. Im sorry for that comment to chimps everywhere. Im sure you can all scout better than the Oilers

The silver lining in this is actually that the Eastern media won't shove him down our throats, except for between now and July when they contemplate suicidal thoughts that Toronto didn't get him.

It would be great if a teams lottery odds were reduced based on the number of top 3 picks a team has had in the past five years. It's absurd a team can end up with four 1st overall picks in the past six years.

Kevin Lowe always boasts about his six cup rings as a player but he has been decisively adapt at getting first overall picks as well.

That's four now, that's a dynasty.

Especially with a salary cap too

4 of the top 10 scorers in the NHL last year, their team missed the playoffs. 3/10 barely made it to the playoffs. The other 3 - Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Tavaras, their team improved by external means other then just them.

While I'm sure McDavid will be good - and I know I've said this before - I think it will be a rarity to non-exitant chance that top 4 defenseman, and esp top pairing defenseman - will ever make it to UFA. Even through trades, they are very rare.

Edmonton has nothing to offer, their developmental program is crap, they don't have many movable assets other then their 6x6's, they are already near the cap, and if they really believe this guy will be their saviour, they will go no where. I'm honestly not surprised they get all these chances to draft generational talents, when you suck every year, it'll probably happen. Get used to it Flames fans, this will probably keep on happening again and again and the next generational talent in 5 years, the Oilers might still be in the lottery for them and win their "golden ticket"

With their junk team, and top 4 D being unavailable for the next half decade (and the team locked up by 6x6's).... Edmonton isn't going to go very far in the standings.

I am disgusted. Process is a joke. How is it humanly possible that the idiots running this league allow teams to have multiple top 3 picks so frequently?

I surprised myself how angry I was when Edmonton was drawn.
