Yup, you are absolutely right.
Markstrom needs to be traded today.

Help me understand this. So if they don’t get it this year is it automatically given to them next year or does it just die and they don’t get anything?

Dumb question, but how is our cap looking for the rest of this year and more importantly, next? Not that we are going to be at the floor, but... taking a bad contract or two, along with a pick or decent-ish young player, might be an option there going forward.

No, then it goes to a whole bunch of conditions that basically boil down to if Florida’s pick isn’t a top ten pick after the lottery then it transfers and the Flames own it. Assuming that transfers then Montreal will get the better of the picks unless the Flames is a top ten pick.
Worst case is the Florida pick doesn’t transfer and Montreal gets the second overall.
Most likely worst case is the Flames give up a pick in the 11-15 range and get late pick from Florida.
Best case is the Flames keep their top ten pick and Montreal gets a late from Florida.

We should definitely be looking to snipe bad contracts.
Putting all of my positive thought into a Markstrom trade today. The return isn't even material. As stated above it's about ensuring we're not in a position to win many games between now and end of season.
I'd also be willing to trade Mangiapane to whoever loses the Guentzel sweepstakes.

I think that's why it made sense not to wait on trading Hanifin until the last second on Friday. This now gives Conroy time to look at the last remaining trade chips for this season and make sure we get as much business done as possible. Come on Fitz, pull the trigger already.
|
I 100% agree. Deals take time. If Craig has more to get done before the TDL, that was a reason to take a reasonable but non-home run return on Hanifin yesterday.

Lol we finally got one of our major wishes with the sell off, we can't really expect the franchise to accommodate our two biggest wishes in one year can we? They're definitely going to do something silly with some of the money.

I don't get why people seem to think his production is so bad for what he is paid...

Again....he is paid to score goals. He did not get almost 6M a year to get "pts 5 on 5" only.
He has 29 goals in his 142 games since cashing in on one good season.
His line mates have 43 and 32 respectively, make less money, are mainstays on the PK, and are the defensive conscience of that line.

I get that many here want to see Markstrom traded so that the Flames can "tank" for a better draft position.
But, he has a full NMC, so he's not going anywhere unless he actually wants to.
I'm not going to hold out any hope for that unless he publicly asks for a trade.
Markstrom has never confirmed that he would waive his NMC to go to New Jersey.
All that he did say was that "it could've been handled a lot different from up top".

So, let's say it is the start of the 2024/25 season. Given what we currently have, what should the defense look like?
Weegar
Andersson
Kylington
---
Who are the other 3-4?
If you want to go further, what does the AHL dman line-up look like?

On top of the NMC etc.....why would you want to throw Wolf behind what is assuredly going to be a complete @#$%show on defense for the next while?
its a great way to ruin a young G.

It's going to be pretty grim on D until (if) Poirier picks back up and proves to be a real talent.
Kylington-Weegar
Pachal-Andersson
Hanley-Miromanov

So
We have some cap room at the deadline now. We could help broker some trades here for picks or perhaps even a prospect. Anyone else think that we might make another move or two yet? If so, who else goes?
I think that Markström, Weegar, Kadri and Coleman didn’t sign up for this situation.
Huberdeau, Mangiapane and Backlund….take it or leave it.
Who knows what happens with Sharangovich and Kuzmenko, there has been speculation that both were destined to be flipped anyway.
Who gets traded today or tomorrow if anyone?

The trade deadline was mere hours away. Conroy took the best deal on offer. The alternatives would have been to trade Hanifin's rights at the draft which would have been even less of a home run or watch him channel his inner Johnny Hockey on July 1.

Well Pachal has proven he can play at this point, plus they extended Miramanov so i suspect that mgmt. believes he will have a spot as well.
Its going to take a while for them to figure things out though, so IMO it would be career suicide to throw Wolf behind it all.
